Activity Worker

Hours: 37.5 (Part-time considered)

Work Pattern: Flexibility is required to meet the needs of the service

Are you motivated by engaging Older Adults in meaningful activities and seeing the direct benefit of this on their health and wellbeing? Are you creative, enabling you to facilitate innovative and appealing activities for patients? Are you driven and able to work autonomously to develop this new strand of activity provision and improve our offer for patients at Woodlands Inpatient Unit?

If the answer is yes, an exciting opportunity has been developed, following a successful 6-month pilot project. We are looking for three new Band 3 Activity Workers, to lead on developing and implementing a, predominantly out-of-hours, activity provision at Woodlands Inpatient Unit.

You would be working with an enthusiastic, hard working ward team, who value the benefits of recreational activity for patients on the ward. You would also get support from your peers on our other two wards and attend a regular Activity Worker and Occupational Therapy Assistant Forum.

Main duties of the job

The role of the unit is to provide specialist mental health assessment, diagnosis, and individual person centred care and treatment. All care and treatment delivered will be based on the principals of recovery that promote dignity, independence and choice. The Inpatient Unit, has three mental health wards, which provide assessment and treatment for both men and women, who have functional and organic mental health conditions, and associated complex and challenging needs. You would be based on one of the three wards, following careful consideration of skill mix. You would be expected to support, and at times cover for, your colleagues unit wide.

We are looking for somebody who has experience of delivering meaningful activity, both in group work and individually, with patients experiencing complex mental health difficulties. We hope to find someone who can use their own initiative and is highly motivated to set up this new strand of meaningful activity provision. You would work as part of a team, focusing on the direct needs of patients, working across boundaries of care and organisations to promote social inclusion and promote active participation in an individualised recovery plan, using the agreed set of values and skills to underpin their day-to-day work.

You would need to be person centred and have knowledge of creative and innovative meaningful activities. You would need to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the particular needs and issues facing the patient group in inpatient older adult mental health. You must indicate a willingness and ability to work independently with patients presenting with behaviours that challenge us. You would need the ability to be dynamic and proactive to devise and follow a structured programme (guided and supported by the Occupational Therapist) and manage your own time effectively. You must have a good attendance record and willingness to work flexibly outside of your agreed working pattern if required, to meet the needs of the service.
