Ever thought of working in the prison sector? It is an exciting, interesting and rapidly developing sector for pharmacy. You can be part of the prison pharmacy team at Greater Manchester Mental Health and support delivery of pharmacy services and medicines administration at HMP Manchester.
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic pharmacist to become part of our extensive multi-disciplinary team. The successful candidate will support the provision of a safe and efficient pharmacy service to the prison's complex population. You will support close working with the mental health, and primary care teams. You must be excellent at communicating, and have the ability to problem solve in challenging situations.
Working hours will be a total of 37.5 hours Monday to Friday. Central Manchester location. Free parking available, and includes a variety of NHS benefits.
You will be supported with the security checking procedure (Counter Terrorism Clearance) to enable you to work in a High Secure Environment. It is essential that throughout your employment that you are compliant at all times with the necessary renewal checks every 5 years.
You must have lived in the UK for 3 years as a condition of pass the prison clearance and your application should demonstrate the validity of this. Without this evidence your application will unfortunately not be shortlisted.
Main duties of the job
- To develop the provision of pharmaceutical care to the prison by providing a clinical pharmacy and prescription monitoring service.
- To participate in the medicines management team activities and meetings
- To contribute to learning from incidents by reporting medication incidents and pharmacy interventions as well as investigating and supporting subsequent actions and learning.
- To undertake the non-medical prescribing course and prescribe within the Trusts prescribing policies as appropriate
- To participate in and deliver medicines training as required
- To participate in the individual performance / KSF review programme.
- To undertake continued professional development.
- To comply with Trust procedures and policies concerning security, safety and patient confidentiality
- GMMH guidelines and rules are considered when making decisions
- To participate in management and clinical supervision and to raise issues of concern.

- Responsibility for provision of Pharmaceutical care The postholder will demonstrate the ability to provide safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of medicines by: Assisting in the provision of a safe and efficient pharmacy service and developing pharmacy services under the supervision of the Senior pharmacist.
- Being responsible for the timely supply of medication and accuracy of dispensed items when working in the pharmacy unless signed for by another pharmacist or checking technician.
- Providing pharmaceutical care to prisoners as part of the pharmacy team.
- Providing pharmaceutical information to medical and nursing staff and prisoners.
- Demonstrating good general clinical knowledge.
- Planning, managing, monitoring and reviewing therapeutic programmes.
- Participating in the prescription monitoring in order to assure safe and effective prescribing.
- Monitoring the quality of patient care through outcomes agreed by the prison care group.

13 Management of Physical and Financial Resources
The postholder will support the appropriate use of resources by:
- Identifying changes in prescribing practices that may impact on the drugs budget
- Ensuring the cost effective use of drugs on the wings
- Attending designated meetings and acting as a communication link to ensure this information is received.
- Ensuring policies and guidelines are followed
- Assisting in stock holding procedures.
- Deputising for the prison manager as required
- Supporting locum pharmacists and technicians when working in the prison pharmacy
14 Education and training
The postholder will ensure adequate education and training through:
- Identifying training needs of staff in relation to medicines management within the prison
- Developing and delivering training to meet the needs of the staff.
- Evaluating the training provided.
- Identifying own training needs and showing a commitment to CPD
- Supporting the CPD needs of the medicines management team.
15 Communication and leadership
The postholder will be able to communicate with a range of staff and show effective leadership with respect to medicines use by:
- Identifying and promoting best practice such as NICE guidance / NPSA.
- Ensuring that issues relating to pharmaceutical care are appropriately represented within the prison care groups, particularly at meetings and in working groups.
- Developing links and working collaboratively with the medicines management team and other professionals to ensure optimum pharmaceutical care
- Investigating problems arising from the use of medicinal products
- Ensuring national and local agendas are delivered.
- Ensuring that all legal requirements relating to prescribing, dispensing and storage of medicines are met. This includes controlled drugs.
- Advising and monitoring the storage of medicines in the prison to ensure potency and quality are maintained.
- Planning and organising own and others workload
- Effective prioritisation and meeting set deadlines particularly when under pressure.
- Advising medical and nursing staff on the actions, properties and the safe, cost effective use of drugs.

- Assisting in the audit and assurance processes for the prison in relation to medicines
- Supporting the implementation of best practice guidelines such as NICE / NPSA
- Ensuring incidents are reported and acted upon as appropriate
