Job summary
Since 2017, perinatal mental health services have expanded nationally. Locally, Wave 1 funding supported the development of a comprehensive service for South Birmingham, followed by Wave 2 funding to establish services across the Black Country, West Birmingham, North and East Birmingham, and Solihull. All teams are multidisciplinary, including psychology, nursing, OT and nursery nursing specialists.
These teams work alongside the established 10-bedded Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) and its Outreach Team, both commissioned by Steps Together, the West Midlands Perinatal Provider Collaborative.
The Outreach Team supports access to and discharge from the MBU, screens out-of-hours referrals, and assists with discharge planning. They provide specialist perinatal input to Crisis Response Home Treatment Teams, including assessments, management guidance, and support with inpatient admission. The team also supports women on adult acute wards, ensuring safe perinatal care and facilitating transfers to the MBU. They offer in-hours liaison at Birmingham Women's Hospital for women with deteriorating mental health and assist women in local parenting assessment units with existing mental health needs.
This post provides consultant cover for the MBU Outreach Team.
