Job summary

The primary role will be as a Consultant Psychiatrist providing senior medical leadership and clinical oversight to the multi professional Liaison Psychiatry Team (PLT) at Heartlands Hospital. Solihull Hospital is a non-acute hospital site with no urgent care (no Emergency Department or AMU) and is covered as a satellite service by the team from Heartlands Hospital on an as required basis. Heartlands Hospital and Solihull Hospital are both part of The University Hospitals of Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Liaison Psychiatry services provided to this Acute Trust are managed by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust (BSMHFT).

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic Consultant medical colleague to compliment the range of clinicians we have in the team. We are ideally looking for someone who has experience of working with adults of old age to compliment the skills of the current consultants in the team and who is preferably dual trained in GA and OA psychiatry. The person appointed needs to be comfortable with the concept of an All-age Liaison Psychiatry service and working with colleagues from Acute Hospitals and the wider Mental Health Trust.

You will work closely with the hospital clinicians and managers and the Mental Health Trust colleagues from the locality areas to offer an in hospital single point psychiatry service to the patients in the general acute hospital and liaise with the necessary existing pathway. You will be encouraged to innovate and help develop services to enhance mental health care amongst the patients with physical health problems to contribute to holistic health care.

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983)
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Obtained inclusion on the Specialist Register; or within six months of the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in Adult Psychiatry; or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register
  • Commitment to personal programme of Continuing Professional Development.
  • Substantial experience of psychiatry, including working with people suffering from severe mental illness, preferably in a community setting
  • Experience of providing psychological and/or social interventions
  • Experience of teaching and training at an undergraduate/postgraduate level
  • Commitment to clinical audit within multi-disciplinary team.
  • Evidence of potential for effective leadership
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work creatively within multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrable interest in the provision of gender sensitive mental health service
  • Willingness to be involved in management of service.
  • Able to participate in Consultant on-call rota.
