Job summary

The Associate Medical Director provides senior medical leadership across the Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism Provider Collaborative, working closely with commissioning and quality leaders to ensure services are safe, effective and evidence based. The role acts as the primary clinical link with Primary Care, strengthening partnerships across health, social care and third-sector interfaces.

The post holder leads the clinical governance agenda, driving improvements in clinical outcomes, patient safety, learning from incidents and service user involvement. They oversee medical workforce objectives, job planning, supervision and appraisal, while fostering a culture of research, innovation and quality improvement.

The role contributes to financial planning and supports service transformation, engaging clinicians in redesign and modernisation. The Associate Medical Director also builds strong relationships with GPs and commissioners, represents the Trust at key forums and supports strategic planning and performance management at a corporate level.

Main duties of the job

The Associate Medical Director will lead the clinical governance agenda across the service area, driving improvements in clinical outcomes, patient safety and learning from incidents, and ensuring service user and carer feedback informs service development. The role promotes evidence-based practice, research and innovation, ensuring that serious incidents, complaints and issues are reviewed in line with policy and that learning is fully embedded.

They will set clear objectives for teams and individuals, provide effective line management for medical staff and ensure supervision, annual appraisal and performance management processes are in place. Working closely with commissioning and transformation colleagues, the post holder will contribute to financial planning and the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective care, including effective use of medical workforce resources.

The role will jointly lead service modernisation and transformation, engaging clinicians in redesign and improvement projects. The Associate Medical Director will also develop strong relationships with GPs, referrers and GP commissioners, represent the Trust at regional and national forums, contribute to strategic planning and performance management and provide clinical advice to the Executive Team and relevant committees.
