Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust

Band 7 ANP Family & Carer Inclusion and Engagement

The closing date is 05 January 2026

Job summary

We have the exciting opportunity to recruit an experienced nurse to help us improve how we engage with family and carers within our male medium and low secure services. This is a fixed term opportunity and the post will cover both Reaside Clinic & Hillis Lodge.

Caring for a relative can have consequences for the family and carers themselves. They often give all their energy and time supporting the person they care for and sometimes don't consider or place priority on their own wellbeing. In combination with this, having a relative admitted to a secure mental health facility can be highly distressing due to complex circumstances surrounding the admission which often includes the Criminal Justice System, victim issues and severe and enduring mental disorder. There is growing evidence to suggest that the positive involvement, support and engagement of families and carers makes a significant contribution to preventing relapse, reducing lengthyadmissions to hospitals and delays in transfers of care and BSMHFT recognises the vital role carers play in supporting the recovery of people who are living with mental ill health.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will take a lead role in the implementation of the Family and Carer Strategy in Secure Services developing a family sensitive culture within services that routinely includes and communicates with family and carers.

The post holder will provide direct input to clinical teams to positively engage and include families and carers in services and in the care of their relatives with consent. The post holder will be a point of contact for all staff and families to provide information, support andsign posting to help, information and therapy.

The post holder will contribute to strategic direction for Carer Inclusion and Engagement in Secure Services and the wider Trust and provide supervision and training for ward based carer leads.

The post holder will be responsible for providing and monitoring specialist evidence-based practice in conjunction with the Clinical Teams, advising staff and services on all matters relating to Carer Inclusion and Involvement.
