Job summary

We are seeking to recruit a motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to join our multi-disciplinary Psychiatric Liaison Team in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Birmingham, to provide senior medical input and leadership. The QEH is a general hospital with an approximate 1200 patient base in Birmingham under University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. The Psychiatric Liaison service is provided by the Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT).

Applicants will require full GMC registration with a licence to practice and be approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act. You will need to be included on the Specialist Register; or be within six months of the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in General Psychiatry (by itself or jointly with Old Age Psychiatry); or included in the Specialist Register through CESR.

Main duties of the job

You will assess patients referred from the QEH Emergency Department or wards to the Psychiatrist Liaison Team or advise and supervise assessments by other clinicians within your team in a timely manner. You will be responsible for providing ongoing care to patients allocated to you, and hold Responsible Clinician status where appropriate. Another significant aspect of this role is the assessment of service users brought in on a Section 136 to the Place of Safety at the hospital. You will also be asked to run a clinic for HIV positive patients presenting with mental health issues.

BSMHFT provides psychiatric liaison services across four general hospitals - QEH, Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Heartlands and Solihull Hospital. You will work as part of the wider medical team for mutual cover arrangements and contribute to the general adult consultant on call rota.
