Job summary

The post holder will take a lead role in co-ordinating and organising as well as recruiting, screening, assessing, implementing and evaluating patients and their treatment plans for ECT. The post holder will work as part of the ECT nursing and wider multidisciplinary team contributing to the development and maintenance of ECTAS standards. The post holder will support the lead Operation Departmental Practitioner/Nurse (ODP) in the recovery area of the ECT department for a given group of patients within an identified framework and model of care. Act as a role model for junior staff in a manner that positively reflects the values of the organisation ensuring effective pathways exist with all stake holders.

Main duties of the job

Engaging in management supervision with line manager and participating in appraisal and a personal development framework as per Trust policy.

o Provide guidance, support and expertise relating to patient care in the psychological and physical preparation for ECT.

o Offer full knowledge and understanding of informed consent and its application to individual patient circumstances/needs.

o Have knowledge of Mental Health Act legislation in relation to ECT, as well as the wider context.

o Ensure effective communication between all disciplines involved in ECT delivery and good customer and public relations within the hospital, the Trust and the community.

o Provide anaesthetic support, practice and knowledge, including:

o suitable preparation of the environment

o pre-treatment clinical assessment and documentation

oxygenation needs pre-, during and post-treatment

o care of and protection of the unconscious patient

o identification of monitoring needs and the operation of equipment/ procedures related to this function

o post-anaesthetic care, complete recovery criteria and the principles involved

o immediate life support skills.

o Ensure the smooth implementation of all organisational/operational issues related to this professional service.
