Job summary
We are looking to recruit a Consultant Psychiatrist for the National Deaf Mental Health Service. The Consultant will work and play a leading role in the Multidisciplinary team. We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Psychiatrist in Deaf Mental Health to provide assessment and management of patients who are profoundly deaf sign language users with mental health problems. This is a National Specialised Mental Health Service directly commissioned by NHS England. Our catchment area covers the middle third of England, South Wales and occasionally Scotland, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and the Channel Islands. We have strong links with other specialised deaf services and other organisations across the country as part of the Deaf Mental Health Working Group to NHS England.
Main duties of the job
This post will be based largely at the inpatient unit dedicated for deaf service users. There is an existing part-time consultant psychiatrist post (6 Pas) covering community and outpatients. Some cross cover of community patients may be needed on occasion.
The inpatient unit, Jasmine Suite, is a 12-bed ward exclusively for Deaf patients who are sign language users, mostly British Sign Language (BSL). The staff include a ward manager and deputies, Band 5 Staff Nurses, HCA's, specialist OT sessions, Clinical Psychologists
We provide support, consultation, and supervision to local mental health services in working with deaf people in their home area. We work across the whole range of subspecialities in adult psychiatry.
The service employs Deaf and hearing staff in inpatient and outpatient/community settings to enhance the quality of assessment and treatment. The lived experience of Deaf professionals is irreplaceable in ensuring we are providing the most appropriate service. All staff are expected to develop a high level of Deaf Awareness and to acquire BSL skills to at least level 2. Training will be provided in this.
