Job summary

Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust provides a comprehensive mental healthcare service for residents of Birmingham and Solihull and to communities in the West Midlands and beyond. We operate out of more than 50 sites and serve a culturally and socially diverse population of 1.2 million spread over 172 square miles, have an annual budget of £240 million and a dedicated workforce of over 4,000 staff - making this one of the largest and most complex Mental Health Foundation Trusts in the country.

The community eating disorder service provides expert treatment to those over 18 years old in Solihull and over 25 years old in Birmingham. This team has expanded significantly over the last 12 months due to community transformation funding.

We are seeking to recruit a full-time 12 month fixed term consultant psychiatrist in adult eating disorders who would work primarily in the community team. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who wishes to shape a new team, and would be perfect for anyone with a keen interest in leadership. The postholder will work with the new community outreach arm which provides more localised care, including home visits, for those who are particularly unwell in order to prevent inpatient admissions, or to facilitate earlier discharges from the unit.

Main duties of the job

Clinical leadership to the Eating Disorder Community Team in delivering responsive, effective and inclusive mental health community services to the designated population.

Expert assessments informed by evidence for referred individuals eating disorders.

In conjunction with the Multidisciplinary team, service user, carers and other involved agencies develop robust risk assessment and management plans.

It is expected that this post would involve travelling to acute hospitals across Birmingham and Solihull, as well as home visits.

About us

The service is part of the West Midlands Adult Eating Disorder Provider Collaborative. This began in 2020 and has won Highly Commended at the BMJ Value Awards. It has brought the inpatient providers in the region together to collectively manage the inpatient waiting list in the region, but also provides clinical support and advice for the community teams in the region which do not have their own inpatient unit.

Community teams present their patients requiring admission to the panel each week on Teams, and where possible, they are matched to the closest unit to their home to minimise travel.

The eating disorder service has 3 arms: community, day treatment and inpatients, and these 3 arms work collaboratively with each other. Many community team staff work across the different arms to provide continuity of care.

As part of the provider collaborative, there are liaison nurses which can assess patients in acute hospitals and offer management advice to the treating medical team. The post holder would work alongside these liaison nurses and build relationships with the acute hospitals with the view to setting up a MEED working group in the region.

Our Trust values are at the centre of all our work: compassionate, inclusive and committed. The postholder would be expected to be an ambassador of these values, and lead through example.
