Job responsibilities
To be responsible for the development, detailed planning and delivery of training courses, workshops and ad hoc sessions to the clinical coding department and to develop and lead an in-house training programme.
Deliver training and induction to all new staff in clinical coding and advise the Clinical Coding Manager on the best means to ensure the on-going training.
To monitor the progress of all coders, give them support and guidance, and highlight individual training needs.
Ensure that all training sessions adhere to national coding standards and coders update and maintain their relevant coding manuals.
To organise, train and work alongside staff in the use of existing Coding Classifications ICD10 and OPCS 4.
As directed by the Head of Clinical Coding, liaise and attend meetings with clinicians and senior managers on a regular basis, to ensure that defined data quality standards are met and maintain on-going expertise.
To take part in the induction of new junior doctors and in awareness and training sessions concerning the clinical coding service, promoting a wider understanding amongst other healthcare professionals.
To support, advise and mentor trainee clinical coders.
To check trainee coders work before it is put onto the system.
To support, advise and train clinical coding staff in the appropriate use of medical terminology and the extraction of information from the health record.

To actively review the training requirements of the coding team, supporting their progression towards the National Clinical Coding Qualification.
To provide coaching for individual coders.
To develop and deliver effective training to other staff within the trust to increase awareness and compliance with coding rules, including the development of in-house training materials.
The post holder is expected to provide a national training service at other Hospitals throughout the country as and when required.
Be responsible for the administration of national clinical coding courses and specialty workshop training materials.
Be responsible for room booking for training courses.
Maintain CCS Registered Trainer status.
Deputise for the Departmental Clinical Coding Manager in their absence.
It should be noted that this post could involve the lifting and transferring of patient records.
Attend mandatory annual CCS Approved Trainer Forums.
Support the collaborative work with One LSC, Lancashire Coding Collaborative , TCDS with regards to the delivery of training and audit services, QA of national training materials and designing case studies for national training courses.
Support the coding budget and financial initiatives in the delivery of income generating training courses, as well as supporting the making of budget savings with the delivery of in-house, cost-free training.
Audit
To be responsible for auditing the completeness, timeliness and accuracy of clinical coding throughout the division/ Trust, utilising the current Information Technology in accordance with the national coding conventions of ICD10 and OPCS4 national and international rules.
To deliver a robust programme of audits and reporting/presenting all findings in an efficient way to the Head of Clinical Coding.,
Produce formal audit reports within agreed timescales and make recommendations on how to improve Clinical Coding quality and accuracy.
Discuss findings and give feedback of audits to individual coders in a professional and sensitive manner as part of their Personal Development Plan, including ensuring any errors identified are corrected in a timely manner.
Quality assure the depth of coding within defined parameters to support clinical effectiveness, liaising with the Head of Clinical Coding and the Departmental Clinical Coding Manager to ensure targets and quality standards are maintained and resolving any problems relating to information documented within the case notes.
To liaise with Clinical Coding Auditor and discuss findings with the coding team.
Assist in the completion and implementation of recommendations from clinical coding audits, including the organisation of re-audits following training delivery to ensure compliance with National Standards and locally implemented policies and to aid the continuous improvement of the Coding Department.
To ensure that the abstracted clinical information from patients case notes is accurate by monitoring through audit, workload and through put.
Attend mandatory Approved Trainer Forums
Attendance at clinical coding conferences/meetings to continue professional development
To action and escalate where necessary all queries related to clinical coding across the division and feedback to the division and clinical coding team.
As directed by the Head of Clinical Coding, attend multi-disciplinary meetings both inside and outside of the Trust as required, communicating complex coding rules to medical, clinical and administrative staff in order to establish accurate diagnosis and procedure codes.
As directed by the Head of Clinical Coding, the post holder will be required to actively raise awareness of the value of the clinical coding and will be a key player in the complex, potentially contentious, audit feedback to the clinical teams and senior managers.
Ensure that the trust deadlines and any necessary operational changes are met.
To develop and implement policies to support the clinical coding training and audit function and identify any training needs within the department.
To undertake and support in clinical coding new initiatives that the Trust introduces as necessary.
As directed by the Head of Clinical Coding, the post holder is expected to provide a national audit service at other Hospitals throughout the country as and when required.
Keep the Head of Clinical Coding and the Clinical Coding Manager appropriately briefed at all times, to include significant issues in the work being undertaken along with any identified performance issues.
To assist the Clinical Coding Manager with the setting of standards for the coding department, in line with National Standards.
To review any coding reference material in line with the published amendments ensuring that the current local coding practice complies with National Standards.
Attain and maintain Registered Auditor status.
Purchase the required coding software audit package.
To travel and participate in external training and audit events so as to continue to improve the quality of clinical coding within the Trust, thus delivering a professional, income-generating work-stream, adhering to strict deadlines and high levels of professional conduct.
Act as mentor and point of contact to the clinical coding department andprovide an expert point of reference for coders to address quality issues within the clinical coding department, helping in the understanding of the coding rules and regulations.
Develop and implement locally agreed changes to coding rules and local policies and ensure adherence by the whole department.
Monitor data accuracy and ensure adherence to National Standards to maximise Trust income.
Apply audit formulae to generate statistical analytics, including the creation of diagrams, graphs and other visually relevant analysis.
Liaise with the Clinical Coding manager to set standards for the coding department, in line with National Standards.
Manage and organise the dual role and responsibilities of both an experienced clinical coding trainer and auditor.
Maintain and authorise rotas, annual leave and absences on the e-rostering system.
Promote Trust reputation amongst peers.
Ensure work practices are not wasteful of Trust resources.
Raise any coding issue requiring resolution with the Clinical Coding Manager.
Any other duties as discussed with the line manager.
