Job summary

The department in Blackburn is a fully integrated Urology outpatients, ward and offices, all of which are contained in a dedicated unit. The Urology ward is based on B14. The dedicated Urology outpatient's suite has facilities for flexible cystoscopies and transperineal and transrectal ultrasound and prostate biopsies. The department also has two Holmium:YAG and one Thulium-fibre laser machines that are used for endourology. In addition, there is two TULA laser machine to enable flexible cystoscopy and bladder tumour ablations procedures in the out-patient setting.

The department is an accredited cancer centre for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network where the major pelvic cancer surgery is split between East Lancashire Hospitals Trust and one other provider. The trust has two NHS commissionedda Vinci robots.

On the Burnley site there is a Urology Investigations Unit (UIU), which is a large, purpose-built unit where flexible cystoscopy, urodynamics, TULA laser ablations and perineal precision point prostate biopsy sessions, and out-patient (OP) clinics take place. Some minimally invasive prostate procedures traditionally done in theatre are now being done in the OP setting in the UIU and this will expand further. Inpatient work and day case surgery is performed in the Elective Surgical Centre. Paediatric urological surgery is also performed in Burnley. The department provides extracorporeal lithotripsy services once a month, using mobile lithotripsy providers.

Main duties of the job

The job plan is 10PAs annualised. There is ample scope to increase to 12 PAs by mutual agreement based on the needs of the department.

Working with the existing colleagues, the successful candidate is expected to retain a commitment to provide core urological services and participate in the urological on-call rota but will be expected to develop a specialist interest in complex BPH management, urodynamics and functional urology. However for the suitable candidate, and with mutual agreement, there are opportunities within the department to develop specialist expertise in other areas which complement the needs of the department. Appropriate mentoring and support mechanisms are already in place and will be provided by members of the existing multidisciplinary team. The department provides tertiary level referral services including robotic prostatectomy for the Lancashire and South Cumbria cancer network and the new candidate will be expected the ongoing local and network MDT arrangements. If interested, the candidate will be provided the opportunity and support to develop additional specialist interests to augment and increase services provided by the department.

Included in this 10PA job plan there is a once per month mandatory urology directorate meeting session that equates to 0.2 SPA annualised. Predictable on call/ unpredictable on call is referenced within this job plan. The overnight and weekend on call is 1:9. On call intensity supplement will be Category A: 3%

The Emergency Department at Blackburn is the only ED for East Lancashire and is a Trauma Unit in the Lancashire Trauma Network working closely with the Trauma Centre at the Royal Preston Hospital. The ED is supported by Urgent Care Centres at Blackburn and Burnley and a Minor Injuries Unit at Accrington. We have day and night Air Ambulance helicopter landing facilities.
