Job summary

Accountable for assisting the Laboratory Manager by providing a range of custom-made orthodontic appliances for the hospital Orthodontic service as required for service delivery. Providing support in all areas by the production of other custom-made devices and by assisting with the treatment of Oral /Maxillo-facial patients as required for service delivery and defined by relevant training, experience, occupational standards and local policies and procedures

Main duties of the job

  • Constructs orthodontic appliances to prescription that will include removable appliances and simple fixed appliances and may include some more complex functional appliances
  • Constructs high quality study models to help maintain the records and assist in treatment planning.
  • Carries out impression casting and model work in accordance with the laboratory cross-infection control policy.
  • Constructs prosthetic devices for hospital patients that include both full and partial dentures, and undertakes any repairs, relines and alterations as required by prescription
  • Designs/Constructs appliances to prescription for the treatment of temporomandibular joint dysfunction and bite raising appliances.
  • Entering onto the laboratory computerised database accurate records of all work done to ensure both the compliance with UK MDR 2002

  • Cleans and maintains the laboratory equipment

  • Observes and complies with current health and safety and CoSHH legislation and local H&S policies and procedures.

  • Attends all statutory training courses as required by the Trust

  • Assists the laboratory manager in the implementation of the laboratory health and safety policy and ensures a safe working environment for the laboratory staff, patients and visitors. Ensures that all accidents, incidents and untoward occurrences are reported in accordance with trust policy.

  • Creates digital study models by use of model scanner and associated software

Job description

Job responsibilities

6. Identifies problems and communicates on matters relating to the design and construction of devices with consultants and other clinical/nursing/laboratory staff. Communicates clearly with patients when assisting in clinical environment.

7. Entering onto the laboratory computerised database (Labtrac), accurate records of all work done to ensure both the compliance with and maintenance of, the quality standards and procedures relating to the UK MDR 2002 and in accordance with MHRA registration policy and departmental licence as a registered manufacturer of custom-made medical devices.

8. Retrieving information from database to deal with enquiries and for statistical/audit purposes

9. Cleans and maintains the laboratory and associated equipment to help ensure a safe working environment.

10. Observes and complies with current health and safety and COSHH legislation and local H&S policies and procedures. Safely handles and manages maxillofacial laboratory chemistry e.g. acids, monomeric liquids and evaporative solvents. Safely handles and uses laboratory equipment e.g.. Laser welder, high speed cutting equipment.

11. Actions R&D as required for own mandatory CPD/CPE. Participates in and supports clinical trials and equipment testing as required.

12. Attends all statutory training courses as required by the Trust

13. Assists in training of student nurses and other PCD groups as required.

14. Ensures a good working relationship between technical colleagues, clinical and nursing staff and members of other departments.

15. Assists the laboratory manager in the implementation of the laboratory health and safety policy and ensures a safe working environment for the laboratory staff, patients and visitors. Ensures that all accidents, incidents and untoward occurrences are reported in accordance with trust policy.

16. Treats patients, clients and colleagues with dignity and respect regardless of gender, disability, race, religion or sexual orientation.
