Medical Engineering Technician

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Medical Engineering Technician to join a small friendly team based at Furness General Hospital .

The department is responsible for the commissioning, service and maintenance of wide range of medical devices used within all areas of clinical care including ventilation, endoscopy, Neonatal and theatre based medical equipment.

Main duties of the job

Duties will include medical device commissioning, service, repair, implementation of regulatory action and safe disposal of devices at the end of life.1) A good knowledge of electro-mechanical engineering theory,2) A logical approach to fault finding on complex electro- mechanical medical equipment3) Proficient IT skills in the use of a database system for maintenance recording and be familiar with the Microsoft office applications suite.4) Knowledge of general medical equipment and medical terminology is desirable but not essential.5) The ability to communicate effectively and build lasting relationships with all members of staff, visitors and suppliers6) Good organisational skills and be able to manage and prioritise their own day to day workload.

About us

We operatefrom three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, andUlverstonCommunity Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Essential

  • Professional electronics knowledge acquired through HND in electronics, medical engineering or equivalent with additional practical knowledge gained through technical training, short courses and developed practical experience.

Desirable

  • Degree level qualification in either Medical device maintenance or electrical and electronic engineering Physiology training to cover a range of equipment. VRCT Membership

Experience

Essential

  • Analysis and diagnosing of faults in complex Electronic/Mechanical equipment.
  • Experience of safe operating systems used in the maintenance and repair of complex electronic equipment.
  • Self-management-workload planning-routine maintenance, prioritising breakdown maintenance.
  • Medical device calibration and maintenance

Desirable

  • Evidence of regular training courses to further skills and experience
  • Experience of Medical device calibration and maintenance

Skills, Ability and Knowledge

  • Effective verbal and written communication with colleagues at all levels of the organisation and with external agencies and industry..
  • Highly developed skills:-manual dexterity, co-ordination and sensory skills for use of precision tools & materials in the maintaining of delicate equipment.

  • Ability to work in awkward positions and unpleasant environments e.g. plant rooms, behind patient bed heads and within theatre environments
