The Role

These unique posts provide rich opportunities to develop interests and expertise in medical education whilst broadening your clinical experience.

  • We have a vacancy for two Junior Clinical/Education Fellow to commence July 2023 for 12 months.
  • The posts will 50% educational and 50% clinical service provision (clinical attachment in Critical Care) and you will work a 2 six month rotations between clinical and education duties.
  • Funding will be made available for the successful applicants to complete a medical educational qualification (if undertaking the role for a full 12 months only) if the candidate does not already have this qualification. The qualification and higher education institute where this will be undertaken will be determined by the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Role - Junior Clinical Fellow in Critical Care (50% of time per candidate)

Summary of the Role

Critical Care at ELHT is a well-supported environment and we are happy to welcome doctors who wish to just have a taster of the speciality prior to doing something else, or those committed to a career in the specialty.

Although this post is not a recognised UK training post, the post-holder will have a named, enthusiastic supervisor, and be supported in undertaking a wide range of CV-enhancing activities.

Education Role - Junior Clinical Fellow in Education (50% of time per candidate)

The Department of Undergraduate Education [DUE] at ELHT sits within the Directorate of Education, Research and Innovation [DERI]. We have a proven track record of providing high quality clinical education and training.

These will be multi-professional sessions and will span a broad range of specialities and topics. Although we will look to utilise any special interests or knowledge, your education delivery will not be limited to any specific speciality.

It is anticipated that majority of the post holder's role will be focused towards undergraduate medical students and physician associates in locality. However it is strongly expected that you will make some contribute to the education of other learners within the Trust

Critical Care

We are a big department of 45 Consultants, 14 Associate Specialists/Specialty doctors and approximately 25 trainees ranging from new starter CT1 to advanced year ST7. We work across two sites: Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital.

We have a busy 20 bed critical care unit and a 4 bedded postoperative care unit based at RBH. We take medical and surgical emergency patients and postoperative elective patients requiring a higher level of care. There is excellent opportunity to gain experience in caring for critically ill patients and the practical techniques pertinent to this. The roles will be based within critical care with some potential for anaesthetics for candidates with a strong interest.

During your clinical time you will:

Main Duties

  • Attend ward rounds
  • Take part in outpatient clinics (across Trust)
  • Attending MDT meetings
  • Clerking of new admissions
  • Undertaking routine clinical procedures on wards
  • Process chasing of investigations, referrals and procedures
  • Prescribing
  • Discharge summaries
  • Contributing to quality improvement across the pathway

Learning & Development

  • Teaching experience is easily available even when working clinically. We host medical students from UCLan and Lancaster University, as well as PA students, nursing students, trainee ACPs and a variety of allied health professional students.
  • There is an active Postgraduate Medical Centre and various postgraduate meetings and events take place regularly, details of which can be obtained from the Postgraduate Administrator

During your Education time you will contribute to clinical placements of all learners providing:

    • Skills sessions
    • Ward based supervision/teaching sessions
    • Bedside teaching sessions
    • Lecture and tutorial session (where required)
    • Case presentations
    • CBL and/or PBL
    • Simulation sessions (where required)

      Management

      • Work with the education teams at ELHT and, where appropriate, from all our education partners
      • Collaborate and work closely with East Lancashire Primary Care educators where opportunities permit
      • Participate in appropriate curriculum committees
      • Provide leadership and oversight to the ELHT Foundation School Medical Undergraduate Teaching Committee

      Learning & Development

      • Network with clinical staff to share best practice.
      • Work collaboratively with the all Educators across the organisation to promote standardised training and education
      • Assist with the update of lesson plans and teaching resources to constantly seek to improve the quality of education through the use of evidence-based practice, liaising with professional colleagues, reviewing literature and evaluating feedback
      • Develop evaluation methods to assess the impact of education on patient care
      • Deliver programmes of learning
      • Set up and maintain equipment for teaching sessions, as required
      • Provide constructive feedback to learners on their performance
      • Produce regular reports and audit data on progress to the Clinical Education Lead which are clear, fluent, concise and easily understood
      • Actively promote equal opportunities for access to learning & development to all staff from all backgrounds
      • Act as a member of the education team with attendance at relevant meetings, as directed
      • As a student supervisor, your role will be to oversee your student(s) progress during the module and provide feedback both verbal and written.

      Professional Development, Supervision & Support

      • The candidate will complete a postgraduate certificate in medical education or other similar educational qualification
