Job summary

We have a vacancy for an Anatomical Pathology Technologist; the successful candidate would join our small team of qualified APT's supported by administrative staff. We are looking to recruit an experienced Anatomical Pathology Technologist holding as a minimum the level 3 qualification or equivalent certificate and diploma. The successful candidate will ideally have experience in all our post-mortem specialities, but consideration will be given to those who have not had the opportunity to work in centres where PMCT or Forensic cases are performed. Such a candidate would be given training and support to achieve competency.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Anatomical Pathology Technician (APT) you will liaise with Trust colleagues, His Majesty's (HM) Coroner, Undertakers and other external agencies to provide a caring, compassionate mortuary service. Supporting the Mortuary Supervisor with running the service with fellow APTs. The post holder will participate in the out of hours rota.

We have been at the forefront of developing CT as a non-invasive diagnostic alternative to traditional post-mortem for a number of years and currently derive a cause of death using CT on Coronial post-mortems. We advocate external only and limited examinations where possible, and also perform clinical intervention as preparation for angiograms.We perform a limited amount of post-mortems a year. This includes adult, coronial and forensic examinations.All our APT's participate in an on-call roster and the usual standby and on-call payments.

  • Level 3 diploma in anatomical pathology technology or equivalent (supporting older style certificate and diploma holders)

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Essential

  • Post qualification experience
  • Have good knowledge of the variety of post mortems examinations
  • Knowledge and understanding of HTA standards and codes of practice.
  • Knowledge or relevant experience in statutory processes surrounding death. Including the medical examiners system.
  • Able to adopt a professional approach with distressed relatives.
  • Competent in the use of IT software systems and handling sensitive personal identifiable data.
  • Knowledge of requirements for issuing Medical Death Certificates Giving The Cause of Death
  • Understanding of seasonal pressures and demands of a mortuary service
  • Able to deal with emotionally distressing situations in a sympathetic, professional manner.

Experience

  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting with multidisciplinary teams across organisational boundaries
  • Experience of working with people in sensitive and emotional situations

Desirable

  • Working knowledge Patient Administration Systems.
