The Coronary Care Unit (CCU) is a 10-bedded high tech area who's patient group is largely patients with acute cardiac problems. The patients are usually monitored by cardiac monitors and other support devices. The Nurse to patient ratio is at the recommended higher level to enable the staff to be more hands on with the patients; deal effectively with emergencies, and invest time in communication & education with patients.
It provides a 24hr service 7 days a week to the patients of East Lancashire.
We work closely with The Cardiology Ward (B6) which a 20 bedded ward is caring for inpatients following on from the Coronary Care Unit with the facility to telemetry monitor up to 8 patients. It also includes an ambulatory heart failure clinic to enable patients to receive IV diuretic therapy in order to prevent in-patient admissions. It provides a 24hr service 7 days a week to the patients of East Lancashire. Staff would normally rotate to B6 for short spells on a rota system. This enables us to cover staffing more flexibly.
We invest in our staffs' training & Development and have a Cardiology Practice Educator who supports all new staff in addition to the Trusts 12 month Preceptorship programme (for NQN)
One of our big priorities is maintaining SPEC status on our the Nursing Assessment Performance Framework (NAPF) - which is all encompassing of delivering safe personal & effective care with an effective team.
Main duties of the job
- Takes the nursing history of patients through interviewing and observations
- Maintains accurate clinical observations of the patient's condition
- Interprets the significance of data to the patient's condition and progress
- Identifies and discusses nursing problems or needs with the patient, relatives and other staff
- Co-ordinates the care given by nurses, medical, paramedical staff and social
- Takes responsibility for personal development and education including in-service training
- Maintains standards of conduct and dress to sustain the public confidence in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and the Trust's Policies
- Identifies the priorities of nursing care for patient
- Gives skilled care to patients and administers drugs and treatments as prescribed with safety and accuracy.
- Communicates effectively with patients, their relatives and co-workers.
- Liaises with medical, para-medical staff and social workers in the delivery of care
- Ensure that individual patients are assessed and that care is planned to meet their handling and moving
- Applies research findings to nursing
- Assesses the learning needs of patients, relatives and staff (including learners).
- Demonstrates nursing skills to patients, relatives and staff (including learners) and support
- Reflects on learning experiences with patients, relatives and staff (including learners)
