Job summary

The Consultant AHP Lead for Nutrition & Hydration will be responsible for the development and implementation of operational and strategic plans for the Nutrition and Hydration across the Trust and for ensuring the development of a progressive and responsive service within a robust clinical governance framework.

We are seeking a dynamic, compassionate, motivated individual with substantial clinical expertise and experience in the specialty of nutrition. You must be an experienced and dynamic nutritional expert in order to provide leadership and direction to a range of multi-professional staff across the organisation and beyond.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a successful clinical and operational background within a variety of setting, as well as significant achievements in the delivery of transformational change.

The successful candidate will need excellent interpersonal, organisational and leadership skills to take the Nutrition and Hydration Strategy forwards. You will act as a role model in promoting effective and excellent nutritional care for patients throughout the Trust, influencing and improving the quality of care delivered to our patients.

This post can be a developmental role for the right candidate with an option for commencement at 8a/8b level depending on experience and qualifications with support to attain the full requirement of the service specification.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant Practitioner will provide highly specialised, expert advice, consultancy, clinical expertise, training and leadership to all Trust staff within the areas of nutrition and hydration to provide assurances of Trust wide compliance of Regulation 14, Health and Social Care Act 2008: Regulations 2014.

To exercise advanced clinical expertise, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care demonstrated through the advanced competency framework provided through the MSc programme and under the four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice: Clinical skills, Leadership & Management, Research, and Education. This will be done in collaboration with AHP, medical and nursing colleagues

The post holder will develop and influence strategy and policy to ensure excellence in clinical care. Collaboration with all relevant AHP / nursing / medical groups will be expected to ensure strategies and policies are comprehensive.

The post holder will have the authority to challenge inappropriate clinical practice; they are integral to the Trust's clinical governance and assurance structures and will produce an annual report on the state of compliance to nutrition and hydration standards within the Trust and any nutrition related incidents.

The post holder will be responsible for providing expert advice to the Catering Team on meal planning and will ensure that the Trust Food and Drink Strategy meets the national standards.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership in the field of nutrition and hydration (Trust-wide). Deliver visible expertise and a clear focus of clinical leadership in relation to nutrition and hydration in a range of care settings across the Trust, contributing to the improvement in the quality of patient care.
  • Monitor compliance of nutrition and hydration standards by investigation and monitoring of related incidents, management of risks, review of complaints and leading on audits, analysing and collating data and ensuring that the information is supplied in a timely manner to inform Trust Governance and national reporting requirements via Nutrition and Hydration Steering Group and provide assurance to the Clinical Effectiveness group on a bi-monthly basis.
  • Provide professional leadership to the Trust multi-professional Nutrition Support team, including setting of objectives, supporting recruitment, monitoring effectiveness and implementing ongoing developments.
  • Direct line management of Nutrition Nurses to include recruitment, appraisals, Eroster, travel expenses etc.
  • Write, review and implement nutrition and hydration related policies, the Trust food and drink strategy.
  • Implement and oversee the Nutrition Excellence Award.
  • Apply for research funding. Lead on research, establish priorities, liaise with external partners and the Trust Department of Education and Research.
  • Lead on clinical audit and quality improvement projects related to nutrition and hydration. Develop and influence strategies to ensure excellence in clinical care for patients.
