Job summary

This is an outstanding opportunity for an enthusiastic Consultant to join our friendly, dynamic and experienced team in our large well-established department and work in close co-operation with other clinical and managerial colleagues to provide a high quality clinical dermatology services for the local population of East Lancashire. There is no on-call commitment associated with this post.

Full and part-time applications will be considered.

Burnley General Hospital has a purpose-built dedicated dermatology department in the phase 5 development, where we offer a full range of services. The Royal Blackburn Hospital also has a dermatology outpatient suite which includes a dedicated dermatology theatre, treatment room and phototherapy suite.

Dermatology outpatient services are currently offered at the Blackburn, Burnley and Rossendale Sites.

The Dermatology team offers a full range of services:

  • Cutaneous allergy service
  • Female and male genital dermatology clinics
  • General adult dermatology clinics
  • Joint consultants clinic
  • Joint dermatology/rheumatology clinic
  • Outpatient daycase nurse led treatment service
  • Paediatric dermatology clinics
  • Phototherapy including photodynamic therapy
  • Post-Transplant surveillance clinic
  • Psoriasis clinics with BADBIR registration/BSTOP enrolment with a dedicated research nurse
  • Skin surgery including Nurse-led theatre lists
  • Skin cancer clinics including 'one stop' clinics
  • Systemic therapy nurse led drug monitoring clinic

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to work within a multi disciplinary team of colleagues including HCAs, nurses, specialist nurses, ANPs and Pharmacist to deliver high quality dermatology care to our patient population. You will be expected to delivery both new and review clinics, including 2 week wait suspected cancer patients, across both our Blackburn and Burnley sites with the support of our colleagues. There is also the opportunity to become involved in the delivery of suspected cancer tele-triage as part of our service. You will also be expected to undertake a regular minor operations session within our dedicated Dermatology Theatres for both your own and pooled patients, whilst supporting effective utilisation of theatre lists to support patient flow.

We also hold a weekly skin cancer MDT which you would be expected to attend either in person or via Microsoft Teams. There is also the opportunity to become involved in our departmental meetings, attending our monthly clinical meeting and monthly Directorate meeting.

An interest in cutaneous allergy is desirable but not essential.

The department has 4 dedicated dermatology beds for the routine admission of patients requiring elective inpatient treatment. Urgent/emergency cases can be admitted in addition to this on both main hospital sites. The beds are on one of the medical wards at Burnley General Hospital but all dermatological treatments are administered by dermatology specialist nurses who can also provide an outreach service to dermatological patients admitted to the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Emergency cases can be admitted to the Blackburn hospital sites - dermatological treatments are administered by dermatology specialist nurses who can also provide an outreach service if required. The Dermatology team has close links with colleagues in plastic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, rheumatology and pathology. Joint clinics are undertaken within the department, the Rheumatologists and regular skin cancer MDTs are held in accordance with Improving Outcomes Guidance. Specialist MDTs are held by Central Lancashire Teaching Hospitals (based in Preston).

Monthly audit meetings and clinical meetings are held by the Lancashire and South Cumbria Dermatology Group and rotate between East Lancashire, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals (Preston), Blackpool and Lancaster.

There are also close links with the Dermatology Centre at Hope Hospital in Salford, Manchester. This offers a hub and spoke model for service delivery and is a tertiary referral centre for paediatric dermatology, psoriasis, photobiology, cutaneous lymphoma, contact dermatitis, urticaria, hair disorders and laser therapy. The academic unit, led by Professor R B Warren, has close links with the University of Manchester School of Medicine. Two Specialty Trainee Posts on the North West Regional Training Programme are attached on a full-time basis to our department, travelling to Salford on a Thursday afternoon for the academic teaching programme. Clinical meetings for all regional trainees and consultants are held at the Dermatology Centre fortnightly. There are some excellent primary care dermatology services across East Lancashire incorporating enhanced GP surgery services, GPwER services, community nurse-led eczema clinics and outreach paediatric nurses.

The Lancashire and South Cumbria dermatology collaborative (incorporating representatives from primary, intermediate and secondary care clinicians are currently reviewing dermatology services across the area. Using Models of Integrated Service Delivery in Dermatology as a framework we are aiming to link these primary, intermediate and secondary care more effectively in order to develop a more integrated service across the network and to ensure patients are seen right service first time. Dermatology at East Lancashire Hospitals Trust is committed to supporting and working with the local health authority intermediate service. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate fully in developing and delivering the agreed model of future service provision. The successful candidates will have access to mentoring and support. This will be provided by the Clinical Lead for the Unit and also the other substantive post holders. There is also a well-established leadership course for new consultants under the auspices of the postgraduate education department.
