An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6/7 Nurse (depending on experience )to join our busy Cardiology department as a Arrhythmia Nurse Specialist Nurse. The post holder will be expected to work Monday to Friday in order to meet the needs of the demanding service. Job share will be considered.
The Royal Blackburn Hospital Cardiology services comprise of a 10 bedded Coronary Care Unit, a 23 bedded Cardiology ward, 2 Cardiac Catheter Labs, Cardiac Diagnostic service and Cardiology out-patients department.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring patients diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmias are managed effectively. You will need to demonstrate good interpersonal skills and competence in ECG interpretation.
You will be expected to work alongside the Lead Cardiologist and Arrhythmia Specialist Lead for the service to establish and to deliver consultant supported arrhythmia and cardioversion clinics and pre-op clinics for patients undergoing complex device implantation and cardioversions.
You will provide continuity of care by following the patient's journey from clinic appointments, admission, discharge and follow up. You will offer continued support through the advice telephone line and drop in clinic, as well as providing education for patients and family.
Main duties of the job
To independently provide a specialist nursing service and support for people living with cardiac arrhythmia, including cardiac resyncronisation therapy (CRT), implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD), permanent pacemakers (PPM).
To ensure patients and their families are fully supported by providing clinical/educational and counselling support.
To work as part of a team to deliver expert nursing services within a specialist area managing a case load of patients.
To support and inspire colleagues and play a key role in development and training.

- To ensure that patients and their families who have been diagnosed with an arrhythmia either in an acute setting or chronic condition are fully supported by providing clinical/ educational and counselling support, ensuring sensitivity to patients needs and ethnic requirements.
- To independently provide specialist nursing care for all arrhythmia patients including those requiring electrophysiology (EP) procedures, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), permanent pacemakers (PPM), cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices and implantable loop recorders.
- To assist in the development of evidence based clinical nursing practice in line with current research and guidelines.
- To link with healthcare teams in order to increase knowledge and facilitate the care of this group of patients in primary and secondary care.
The post holder will work closely with the Arrhythmia Specialist Lead and will be supported in undertaking relevant courses/accreditations and training in order to develop the role and enhance the patient experience/journey.
- Working closely and liaising with other services and directorates to ensure maximum effectiveness, quality and patient experience In conjunction and with the full support of the consultant cardiologists they will be expected to develop and deliver improved diagnostic, referral and treatment integrated pathways for arrhythmia patients to ensure they receive the highest possible standard of evidence based care in line with The National Service Framework (NSF) for Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) 2000 (Chapter 8 Arrhythmias and Sudden Cardiac Death) and NICE guidance on:-
- The management of atrial fibrillation in primary and secondary care (2014)
- The recommended use of atrial-based pacing over ventricular-based pacing in patients with sinus node disease in 2005
- Recommended implantation rates (per million population) for all categories of Cardiac Device pacemakers, ICDs and CRT devices (in conjunction with HRUK)
- The management of patients with Transient loss of Consciousness (syncope) in 2010
- The post holder will be expected to develop and deliver improved diagnostic, referral and treatment integrated care pathways for arrhythmia patients admitted to ELHT to enable compliance with the Care Quality standards and guidelines set out in the above documents.
