Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 12 month secondment to join the Cancer and Oncology team as a Assistant Directorate manager. If you are looking to develop your skills and want to gain further experience in leadership within Cancer services at ELHT, then we look forward to hearing from you!

Cancer and Oncology Services sit within the Surgery and Anaesthetics Division at ELHT & the team includes a number of disciplines across the staff groups including medical, technical, nursing, and administrative staff who work together to ensure delivery of safe, personal and effective care.

Over a typical year the Oncologists deliver over 18,000 outpatient appointments, the Chemotherapy Units provide over 8000 treatment episodes, the Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) provide over 25,000 contacts, and the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) Coordinators support over 15,000 MDT Discussions.

The role involves leading a team of administrative staff and working closely with the Directorate manager and wider cancer services team to manage Trust Cancer performance and support service development to improve Cancer services for the patients of ELHT.

Key duties will include:

- Leading the administrative team within the cancer and oncology services

- Building relationships with stakeholders and between stakeholders

- Supporting the management of Oncology as delegated by the directorate manager

- Supporting Cancer Performance

- Identifying and delivering service improvement both within and outsideofCancer Services

- Deputising for the Directorate Manager as required

The successful candidate will have a good understanding of the national cancer agenda and have an ethos of continual quality and service improvement.

Excellent communication skills are essential as there will be a need to motivate, influence, inspire, and encourage a number of grades anddisciplines both at the local and system level.

Job responsibilities

Working with the Cancer Triad, actively engage with clinical and non-clinical staff across the Trust in the business of the Cancer Services and Oncology Departments. This includes building processes and systems around patient needs and ensuring delivery of excellent healthcare.

To take responsibility for ensuring the tracking and MDT Coordinator processes are robust and adhered to ensuring an annual review process is evident.

As the nominated assistant, to maintain Directorate focus and commitment to achieving performance targets at all times with a particular focus on Cancer Waiting Times. Utilising the Cancer Performance Meeting and Tumour Site Specific PTL Meetings as forums to drive improvements in waiting times.

Working with the clinical and non-clinical teams to identify areas of improvement and streamline patient pathways to achieve the cancer target to ensure our patients receive fast diagnosis and timely treatment.

To hold line management responsibility for the administrative function within the Cancer Services and Oncology Departments. Through the appraisal process support staff to develop and identify training needs and opportunities.

Ensure that staff within Cancer Services are working within the scope and remit of their role escalating issues of concern following the Trust and Departmental Escalation Policies.

Work under the instruction of the Directorate Manager to ensure that cross Directorate working is managed proactively to deliver streamlined and efficient cancer pathways.

Ensure that decisions taken are fully informed and properly balanced, taking account of collective as well as individual need, and the requirement to live within available resources.

Promote and support delivery of national and local cancer performance targets as one of the ways of raising healthcare standards.
