Biomedical Scientist Cellular Pathology/Histology

Job summary

Cellular Pathology is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, self-motivated and conscientious member of staff who is able to work alone, enjoy working as part of a team, in the provision of an efficient, effective and comprehensive service in the cellular pathology department.

Suitable candidates must be HCPC registered, being part of the Cellular Pathology management team, assisting Senior BMSs, and Lead BMS.

Main duties of the job

Participation in the junior rota covering all areas of laboratory processes, maintenance and monitoring

This entails production of histological stained sections of surgical and post mortem tissues, which the consultant pathologist uses in diagnosis.

This is to be of the highest quality possible ensuring patients' needs are of paramount importance.

Requires completed IBMS registration portfolio and experience in a histology laboratory and be hold a current registration with the HCPC

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Registration with the Health Professions Council as a biomedical scientist.
  • Completion of registration portfolio
  • A Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent.
  • Participation in CPD

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a diagnostic cellular pathology laboratory as a BMS.

Desirable

  • Experience of standard diagnostic methods in the relevant pathology discipline.

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to recognise normal histology morphology and routine staining techniques.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations relating to safe working in pathology laboratories.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
  • Computer skills and use of Microsoft Office suite
  • Good manual dexterity & accurate pipetting skills.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality assurance processes.
  • Knowledge and experience of histology laboratory working practices
