Physiotherapy is an integral part of the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injury. Physiotherapy assistants are essential members of the team delivering this service, providing administrative and clinical support to the physiotherapists, along with direct involvement in patient treatment sessions.
This post involves working with patients following spinal cord injury during aquatic therapy sessions providing personal care and support in addition to providing administrative assistance within the team.
An ability to provide care to people with a disability, good verbal communication on the telephone and in face to face contact, organisational skills such as being able to respond to requests for assistance from multiple sources, a sensitive and empathetic approach in patient contact are all necessary qualities. The successful candidate will be able to carry out instructions, provide feedback and balance responses to varying demands of patient care and administrative support requested from the physiotherapists. An ability to participate in manual handling tasks is crucial. Competence and capability in undertaking out personal care, such as assisting patients with dressing and toileting, is needed. Experience of working within a team is essential.
Experience in working in a customer care setting is essential and previous employment within the NHS is desirable.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the job comprise:
- Assisting qualified physiotherapy staff, enabling them to implement patient treatment programmes
- Supporting the qualified physiotherapy staff in non-clinical tasks within the Aquatic Therapy environment, and occasionally in clinical treatment situations.
- Documenting and feeding back to qualified physiotherapists following all contact with patients
- Providing the necessary personal care to spinal cord injury patients to enable them to participate in Aquatic Therapy
