Job summary

Interested in developing a career in Clinical Health Psychology, a rewarding job with a great team with potential to do research?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a clinical psychologist to join the expanding team at the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC) and develop clinical skills of working in rehabilitation with inpatients across the lifespan. The NSIC team consists of clinical psychologists, a psychological therapist and family counsellor, administrator and assistant psychologists and leads national and international clinically based research.

Applications are encouraged from those currently employed as a Band 7 or qualifying in 2025. For development to 8a you will be supported to develop skills across predetermined competencies of therapy, supervision, teamwork and leadership, see job descriptions for further detail.

This is a lifespan service and therefore the post includes working sometime with CYP and maintaining skills in this area, if this area a long term career interest this can be supported and discussed at interview.

Required working days would be Tuesday and preferably Wednesday.

We would encourage anyone wanting a full-time position to apply, as clinical or research opportunities may be available in this team or across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Clinical interventions include individual CBT, ACT and mindfulness-based therapy, neuropsychological rehabilitation and specific condition interventions such as for chronic pain. The post will involve close working with non-psychology colleagues from across the MDT. A systematic rehabilitation approach facilitating self-management skills is core to our provision, with the team leading the renowned Stoke Mandeville Spinal Needs Assessment and Goal Planning Programme (finalist for HSJ in 2016).

The NSIC provides inpatient care to 30% of adult spinal cord injuries within NHS England and is the leading provider of paediatric spinal cord injury services. The NSIC at Stoke Mandeville Hospital pioneered the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injury.

The psychology team has led several national and international research partnerships, past and present, and has over 150 publications in peer reviewed journals, textbooks, and an increasing profile of research impact including podcasts, policy/guideline development and social media engagements.

Testimonial from a previous Band 7 and 8a team member after family relocation: "Genuinely the best decision as a newly qualified - the quality of applied psychology I gained from working alongside such skilled and supportive colleagues at the NSIC was the absolute best start to my career".

The NSIC Psychology Team is part of a wider BHT Psychological Services Team of 31 psychological therapists working across Buckinghamshire.
