Job summary

The Respiratory Unit encompasses two respiratory wards that has now merged into 1 unit. Respiratory Support Unit (RSU)and Respiratory ward (formerly Ward 4 and 7). The team works closely with the Buckinghamshire Integrated Respiratory Service, Intensive care Unit, Outreach teams, A& E resus teams. We receive patients direct from A&E Resus, A&E Majors, A&E RAT, Assessment Observation Unit, and other Acute Medical unit .

We also receive patients from other areas from within the hospital who require NIV retrieval service and specialist respiratory knowledge and skills. The patients are assessed, stabilised and either transferred appropriately to RSU or Respiratory ward or discharged.

It is a busy environment providing great learning opportunities especially in acute respiratory care. The nursing team works closely with their colleagues from other disciplines to promote a smooth and efficient cohesive service. Ideal candidates will have initiative, a willingness to learn and an ability to prioritise.

It is an excellent ward to develop your acute care skills, such as Non-invasive ventilation and tracheostomy care. Due to the nature of the specialty you will also gain some palliative care experience and knowledge.

Whilst experience within an acute care setting is preferred, those newly Registered will receive good support to gain the right skills. Good communication is essential in this environment where patient care is paramount.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and thedevelopment and/or implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

  • Is expected to carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision.
  • Is expected to supervise qualified junior staff and HCAs.
  • Is able and expected to teach qualified and unqualified staff. Including preregistered and post basic students.
