Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to contribute to the support and care needs of patients with thoracic and rarer cancers. Patients with lung cancers, brain tumours, head and neck and thyroid cancers and sarcoma make up the wide patient cohort. The post is part of a team of nurses offering care and support to this complex range of cancer patients.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking an individual with established cancer nursing experience and with an interest in lung and /or rarer cancers. Excellent communication skills, and the ability to support patients and carers throughout their cancer journey is a vital aspect of the role. Although the post is based at Stoke Mandeville, cross site working is necessary for clinical work and needs of the service.

As part of this team, you will be linked to the Cancer Care and Haematology Unit and the nature of the role requires close liaison with our Primary Care team, Tertiary Trust Colleagues in Harefield and Oxford, and our hospital and community Palliative Care teams. You will be supported to access relevant training and development appropriate to the role, and you will be encouraged to access regular reflective supervision.

  • Registered Nurse - 1st level with NMC
  • Oncology/Chemotherapy/Palliative care cancer qualification/module
  • Teaching/training qualification and/or substantial teaching experience
  • National Advance Communications Skills Course or willingness to undertake
  • Evidence of continuous professional development

Desirable

  • ECDL or similar IT qualification

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Oncology/GI/palliative care experience
  • Experience of working within and/or with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience in delivering and evaluating teaching programmes to health care professionals including medical staff
  • Experience of and ability to work as an autonomous practitioner

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

  • Understanding and up to date knowledge of issues relevant (cancer/cancer treatment complications, palliative care and end of life care)
  • Awareness of key policies and national recommendations relating to UGI cancers and the broader cancer, palliative and end of life care agenda
