Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Speech/Language Therapist who is passionate about working with young people with complex needs in the further education environment. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a dynamic and innovative team of therapists and therapy assistants, delivering high quality SLT packages of care to young people in Bucks College Group.

The post 16 caseload comprises primarily young people with physical difficulties, learning difficulties, ABI, neurological difficulties, AAC needs and sensory needs such as VI and epilepsy. The post requires close collaboration with a variety of health and education professionals and parents, in delivering a range of evidence-based packages.

We have a strong commitment to CPD with regular clinical supervision. A range of opportunities to develop specialist skills and knowledge will be available including mentoring and shadowing of more experienced staff working within complex needs.

Access to a car to travel between county-wide locations is essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a member of a team of experienced therapists working across FE college sites. You will provide support for young people in Bucks College Group (BCG) with SLCN in term time. You will support clinical projects and developments of practice in this clinical field, and have day-to-day responsibility for a specific caseload within BCG, and independently manage the caseloads in these settings. You will:

  • Be responsible for delivering specialist speech and language therapy input young people with speech, language and communication impairments/disorder who may also have significant learning difficulties who have EHCPs. To identify, assess and diagnose communication impairments and select appropriate types of therapy for effective treatment.
  • To monitor the communicative environments of the educational establishment you are working in.
  • Make independent decisions about caseload management, prioritizing clients to universal, targeted or specialist levels of input.
  • Gain extensive clinical experience and expertise to improve and further develop specialist skills through training, support and study
  • Provide second opinions to less experienced colleagues
  • Independently take SLT students on placements for clinical teaching and supervision
  • To be an active member of an MDT across professional boundaries.
  • Be responsible for the supervision of newly and recently graduated SLT Staff, and unregistered staff and volunteers carrying out SLT related activities

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential

  • Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Health Professions Council License to Practice
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists

Desirable

  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses in Signing
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short course in AAC
  • Evidence of working towards basic competencies for working with dysphagia

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Working as SLT having completed RCSLT competencies with paediatric/ LD caseload.

Desirable

  • Evidence of experience in clinical areas of low/mid tech AAC at a functional level over at least 12 months
  • Working knowledge of the mainstream and/ or special education system 5-25
  • Demonstrates well established knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to client group including safeguarding
  • To be able to use IT for clinical and therapeutic aspect of the post
  • Evidence of working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Evidence of working under supervision with clients who have eating drinking or swallowing difficulties.
