Job responsibilities

As well as fulfilling clinical responsibilities, the post-holder will be expected to play a part in the Specialist Palliative Care departments education activities, and in development projects from time to time, as agreed with the departments other senior staff. The appointee/s will be required to participate actively in the teaching and appraisal of junior staff; other members of the departments clinical team, and community clinicians. The post-holder/s will join the out-of-hours 1st on-call rota for the hospice and will be required to comply with the Trusts and GMCs standards for appraisal and revalidation

Qualifications/Training

Essential

• Medical Degree - MBBS or equivalent
• Evidence of continuing professional development

Experience

Essential

• Three years post MBBS
• Experience in multi-disciplinary team working
• Ability to make decisions at SAS doctor level

Desirable

• Experience at specialist registrar or staff grade level
• Experience in Palliative Medicine

Skills, Knowledge & Personal Attributes

Essential

• Sufficient leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to undertake effectively the role of specialty doctor in a hospice.
• Ability to negotiate & liaise with patients, families & healthcare professionals.
• Ability to prioritise workload, & to work autonomously.
• Self-motivated, pro-active & innovative.
• Adaptable to changing situations, & able to work effectively with people of differing abilities.
• Advanced communication skills, written & verbal.
• Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees.
• Experience of routine clinical audit

Desirable

• Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS and the Government's agenda for its modernisation.
• Computing skills: ability to use word processor, spreadsheet programme and web browser
• Communication skills training
• Management training and experience
