Job summary
The Buckinghamshire Diabetic Eye Screening Programme is seeking an enthusiastic and committed full time retinal Screener/Grader to join our busy team at Stoke Mandeville Hospital/Amersham Hospital/Wycombe hospital as the current incumbent is retiring.
You will also be responsible for assessing retinal images and identifying the presence and severity of diabetic eye disease (diabetic retinopathy). This is a specialised role, using dedicated software to examine the photographic image in detail. This will require high levels of concentration and review, and extended periods of time using display screen equipment.

A trainee without those qualifications would be appointed at Band 3 with the expectation of being promoted to band 4 after completion of the Diabetic Eye Screening/Grading; /Health Screener Diploma within 2 years of recruitment, so a personal commitment is needed to complete the Diploma within the given time frame. It is possible to complete the qualification in a shorter time, but usually not less than 18 months.
Use of own car to allow travel between sites is essential.
Main duties of the job
- To measure the visual acuity of patients using appropriate tests according to patient needs.
- To dilate the patient's pupils by instilling appropriate eye drops.
- To take digital retinal photographs (after an agreed training period); two views of either eye and additional views where widespread disease and/or other pathologies are suspected, using own judgement. To ensure optimum quality of photograph, manipulating focus and brightness of camera and angle ofview as necessary.
- To ensure appropriate positioning of patients for optimum quality photographs, including manual handling/assisting of less able patients.
- To take relevant past ophthalmic history and brief diabetic history from patient and record in the patient's health records.
- Communication with other members of the organisation and respond appropriately.
- Assist with administrative and practical registration of patients into outpatient clinics.
