Job summary

BAND 6 SPECIALIST SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPIST - COMPLEX NEEDS

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Speech & Language Therapist who is passionate about working with children with complex needs in mainstream schools. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a dynamic and innovative team of therapists and therapy assistants, delivering high quality SLT packages of care to children on the complex needs caseload across a range of settings.

The school-aged complex needs caseload comprises primarily children with physical difficulties, ABI, neurological difficulties, AAC needs and sensory needs such as VI and epilepsy. The post requires close collaboration with parents, as well as a variety of health and education professionals, in delivering a range of evidence-based packages.

Experience of paediatric dysphagia and/or a keen interest in developing these skills is highly desirable for this post.

We have a strong commitment to CPD with regular clinical supervision. A range of opportunities to develop specialist skills and knowledge will be available including mentoring and shadowing of more experienced staff working within complex needs.

The post is locality team based in and around High Wycombe. Access to a car or ability to travel between county-wide locations is essential.

Main duties of the job

  • Use specialist clinical skills to manage a specialist caseload of children and young people with complex needs, aged 5-25 years with impaired speech, language and communication in the context of complex neuro-developmental difficulties -cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, complex medical conditions, sensory impairments such as Visual difficulties and eating & drinking difficulties; identify, assess and diagnose functional communication and/or dysphagia impairments, and select appropriate patients and type of therapy for effective evidence based treatment
  • Support the Clinical Leads for Dysphagia and School-Age Complex Needs (SCN) and AAC in developing provision for School-aged children with complex needs and /or dysphagia
  • Provide second opinions and support to less experienced colleagues
  • Independently take students on placement for clinical teaching and supervision, including exam placement
  • Undertake supervision and support of registered and unregistered staff working at lower grades and volunteers
  • Prepare Tribunal reports and attend tribunals as required for the service for school-aged children with complex needs.
