We are looking for highly motivated, energetic, experienced and enthusiastic nurses to join our expanding Intensive Care nursing team. Due to increased funding, we have Band 6 deputy sister/charge nurse posts available on our Stoke Mandeville Hospital Intensive Care Unit.

Our Intensive Care Units have 12 beds at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, which admits medicine/ surgical/ burns/ spinal/ trauma patients, and a 6 bedded ICU at Wycombe Hospital caring for medicine/ cardiology/ stroke and surgical patients. All our staff work cross site between the 2 Intensive Care Units.

Main duties of the job

  • Actively participate in the delivery of patient and family care, and act as a specialist clinical resource to the nursing and medical team, and other hospital departments and services.
  • On a shift-to-shift basis supervise and co-ordinate effective planning, delivery, evaluation and monitoring of care carried out on the Unit for all patients, with due regard to the BHT vision and CARE values
  • Ensure effective communication with patients and their relatives, keeping them informed of progress and treatment, and providing support as required.
  • Ensure nursing care is delivered in accordance with the Trust ICU policies, procedures and guidelines, NMC Code of Conduct and the additional Standards of Care.
  • Co-ordinate and actively participate in safe and effective intra and inter-hospital transport of patients.
  • Accurately interpret the significance of the patient's clinical signs, recognises the limitations of own sphere of responsibility and promptly refers patient to appropriate personnel.

Essential

  • Good general education

  • Teaching and assessing in practice recognised course ENB 998 or equivalent
  • Evidence of further continued professional development
  • Accredited Critical Care Course

Desirable

  • First degree in Nursing Studies

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge

Essential

  • Competency in critical care related extended role procedures
  • IT literate
  • Ability to communicate verbally in English
  • Knowledge of current issues in health care
  • High motivation and ability to motivate others
  • Good time management skills
  • Managerial and leadership ability
  • Ability to write clearly and legibly in English
  • Ability to work required shift pattern
  • Ability to work required shift pattern

  • Knowledge of evidence based practice and research
