East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust

Senior Scrub Practitioner - Trauma Theatres

The closing date is 12 March 2026

Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Scrub Practitioner to join our Trauma Theatre team at Colchester Hospital.

This role is central to the delivery of high-quality trauma and emergency orthopaedic surgery. The successful candidate will work primarily within Trauma Theatres, supporting the safe and effective management of urgent and emergency cases in a fast-paced environment.

You will take an active senior role in the day-to-day coordination of the trauma theatre suite, supporting clinical decision-making, overseeing safe staffing and list preparation, and ensuring efficient theatre flow. You will work closely with the Theatre Leads to maintain high standards of patient care and service delivery.

To join our friendly and experienced team, you will need to be a motivated, confident and adaptable practitioner with proven experience in the operating theatre environment. Applicants must hold NMC or HCPC registration and must be able to scrub competently. Applicants who are trained as Surgical First Assistants (SFA) are welcome to apply, and SFA skills will be utilised within scope of practice -- but SFA training is not essential.

We are committed to supporting your ongoing development and will provide a supportive environment to enhance your trauma and emergency orthopaedic skills. While your primary base will be Trauma Theatres, occasional cross-cover to elective orthopaedics may be required depending on operational needs

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver high-quality, patient-focused care in a safe, timely and professional manner in accordance with Trust policies and best practice.
  • Provide senior clinical support within Trauma Theatres, including list management, safe staffing coordination, and assisting with urgent and emergency surgical cases.
  • Participate in audits (local, Trust and national), quality improvement initiatives, and workstreams to optimise trauma theatre performance and patient experience.
  • Support Theatre Leads with clinical and operational coordination to maintain efficient patient flow, productivity and compliance with national trauma service standards.
  • If SFA-trained: contribute to first assisting duties within the trauma surgical team, working within scope of practice and Trust policy.
