Job summary
We are inviting applications for a full time consultant for six months. The role will enable the candidate to get acquainted with the inner workings of the department and to provide an excellent opportunity to apply for and succeed in obtaining the substantive consultant post which we plan to recruit to later on during 2026.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will:
- Work with colleagues to provide a Consultant-led service with the highest standard of care
- Work with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines
- Develop and maintain good working practices with wards, out-patients and the ED
- Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues, other departments and primary care
- Offer educational, clinical support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary workforce
- Ensure appropriate information is made available to staff to measure clinical performance and enable meaningful benchmarks to be established and evaluated within your area of responsibility
- Ensure there is a robust process for reviewing the quality of services provided, explaining the causes of success and failure and ensure the highest standards are maintained
- Provide a role model of professional leadership, which underpins the corporate values and behaviours agreed by the organisation, ensuring these are understood and demonstrated by the medical workforce within your area and take remedial action where poor behaviour are demonstrated
- Ensure that junior doctors training conforms to college requirements
- Participate in the appraisal of medical staff within the department in line with the Trust's agreed policy
- Become part of the ICENI teaching faculty in delivering or facilitating courses/programmes.

- Provide on-call cover for general surgery. There is currently a 1 in 12 oncall rota for General Surgery at Ipswich Hospital with a 4 /3 split (Mon-Thurs and Fri-Sun oncalls. The oncall general surgeon is only expected to manage appendicitis in children over the age of 5 years and all other childhood surgical conditions are managed by the Ipswich paediatrics team in conjunction with the paediatric surgeons in Norwich. Vascular surgery emergencies are dealt by the on call vascular team in Colchester.
- Support provision of surgical services to maintain compliance with RTT timeframe
- Provide leadership in developing the hot gallbladder service
- Provide upper GI specialist general surgery services (laparoscopic cholecystectomy, common bile duct exploration and laparoscopic fundoplication amongst others). You will have the opportunity to be mentored and trained in fields that you are potentially interested in
- Issuing of advice to GPs on suitability of patients for referral to outpatients or admission to hospital
- The candidate is expected to be based at Ipswich Hospital. There are no outreach clinics etc. which are currently planned to outlying hospitals.
- Provide supervision to trainee doctors in an Educational and/or Clinical supervisor role (the necessary training will be provided for applicants that have not undertaken these roles previously)
