Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine

Job summary

Applications are invited for this exciting opportunity to join as a Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care (CT3+) at Colchester Hospital, part of East Suffolk & North Essex NHS Foundation Trust. The successful appointee will work under the supervision of consultants gaining experience and delivering intensive care to critically ill patients, and will be exposed to a complement of modern intensive care therapies. The post holder will participate in a 1:8 on-call rota which is fully compliant with the European Working Time Directive.

The post holder, whilst primarily based in the Critical Care Unit, will be able to undertake anaesthetic sessions according to development needs. It is however an essential pre-requisite for this post that the applicant has at least 12 months of anaesthetic training including acquisition of the Initial Assessment of Competence (or equivalent) and the ability to participate in theatre on-call rota when required.

This post would be for 12 months, commencing from May 2026 or earlier by discussion.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join an established and enthusiastic team in delivering quality critical care services at the Trust. The post holder will be expected to take part in the out-of-hours on-call rota for the critical care unit.

As well as immediate duties to the critical care unit, responsibilities of the airway-trained bleep-holder on-call include review of critically ill patients in the emergency department and wards, attendance at cardiac- and peri-arrest calls, trauma calls and paediatric calls. Intra- and inter-hospital transfer of critically ill patient is also required at times, and there is a local transfer training course which will the successful candidate will be required to complete if the equivalent has not been previously undertaken.

Responsibilities will include the supervision of junior staff, teaching, training and participation in departmental governance and quality improvement meetings. There will be flexibility for the post holder to work in different areas in order to pursue special interests.

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Minimum of 1 year of anaesthetic experience and competencies by time of appointment

  • Capacity to take responsibility for own actions and demonstrate a non-judgemental approach towards others
