Job summary
We have a vacancy for a Biomedical Scientist in Biochemistry Department based in Blood Sciences at Colchester Hospital, part time 26 hours per week.
This is a wonderful opportunity for a biomedical scientist to be part of a growing, energetic, highly motivated and dynamic team to provide an efficient and effective service to our patients.
To apply for this post you must be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.
You will enjoy a varied range of responsibilities from maintaining the quality management system and UKAS accreditation, training of less experienced members of staff, validating and authorizing results and most importantly providing quality service for our patients.
The Biochemistry Department has Cobas 8000 (C701/E801), P612 and NORTHSTAR Bio-UV analysers.
You will be required full participation full in a 24/7 shift working pattern and will received enhanced pay in line with Agenda for change unsocial hours payments for maintaining round the clock services.

Main duties of the job
- Undertake testing and processing of biomedical specimens, analysis and entering of results onto the compute
- Supervises and/or trains less experienced staff in own area of work and competency
- The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals. This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions
- Maintain and promote professional image of the Pathology Department
- Perform manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations within a defined service area accurately and efficiently.
- Undertake quality control procedures and the processing of quality control material as per established protocols.
- Participate in the day to day management of stock control and usage. This may include maintaining Blood Transfusion stock levels and records and monitor usage to ensure efficient use where appropriate.
- Be aware of current advances and appraise new techniques.
- Evaluate, interpret and validate test results and escalate where appropriate in line with established protocols.
- Clean and maintain equipment to achieve the optimum instrument performance and maintain a clean and safe working environment.
- Perform basic troubleshooting in line with established protocols and report any faults to a senior member of staff.
- Participate in Research and Development, clinical trials and equipment testing.
