Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the growing and dynamic Acute Oncology Service (AOS) within the East Suffolk & North Essex Foundation Trust to become an Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist, part time 30 hours per week at Colchester Hospital.

Based within the Acute Oncology Service at Colchester Hospital you will focus on the delivery and management of the Trusts Acute Oncology Team (AOT) helping to support and develop the AOS service throughout the trust.

In this role you will provide specialist oncology advice and support for patients admitted with symptoms relating to cancer and cancer treatments, including the management of emergency presentations. You will also support and manage patients experiencing immunotherapy associated toxicities.

As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will exercise a high degree of professional autonomy and make critical judgements using expert knowledge and skills to provide the highest standard of holistic care. This will enable faster and exceptional care of patients with complications from treatment and/or cancer who present acutely unwell.

You will be required to work flexibly across a 7 day service. Due to the nature of this role, you will need experience within the acute oncology service.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide early input of specialist care to oncology patients enabling:
    • Safer and better quality of care to patients with complications of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy (early recognition, better treatment, early discharge)
    • For patients with complications of cancer, rapid referral back to the specialist oncology and/or palliative care teams.
  • Give advice and implement patient care in an area which requires specific clinical knowledge, skills and experience.
  • Work alongside other clinical colleagues in oncology, palliative care, ED, acute medicine, radiology and pathology to ensure quality of care to the patients is maximised. This will include the development of clinical guidelines & education programmes.
  • Undertake appropriate investigation of patients who might benefit from treatment for known cancers
  • Management of the AOS patient caseload
  • Co-ordinate the delivery of an AOS service.
