Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Support Worker to join our Maternity Team at Colchester and Ipswich as Maternity Bereavement Support Worker.

You will be working alongside specialist midwives, caring for women and pregnant people in the areas of bereavement, loss and perinatal mental health.

You will support Bereavement team within Maternity Service to ensure that there is a coordinated approach to providing seamless bereavement care to women/birthing people and their families.

We have full time and part time hours in Colchester and part time hours at Ipswich hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • Develop, manage, and maintain positive, appropriate relationships with service users and their families demonstrating respect, kindness, compassion, and empathy always.
  • Work alongside the specialist midwives (bereavement and perinatal mental health) to actively participate in the recognition and prevention of perinatal mental health illness as part of daily routine.
  • Work with the bereavement midwife in their role, establishing a relationship with families to support them through the grieving process, and provide emotional support if/when the family embark on a future pregnancy journey.
  • Work alongside the perinatal mental health midwives in supporting women and people affected by mild/moderate mental health illness during pregnancy and the early postnatal period on a daily basis.
  • As a key member of the MDT to attend clinics, meetings when required and act as a patient advocate.
  • To assist patients during their stay on the ward, with memory making, spending time with their baby, emotional support. Ensuring the privacy and dignity of all patients are maintained being mindful of patient confidentiality.
  • Act as a positive role model and provide sound professional knowledge to all members of the multi-disciplinary team within the maternity and neonatal service.
  • Provide both practical and emotional support to women and their families, giving them opportunity to acknowledge and express their concerns in a safe environment maintaining confidentiality.

  • Level 3 Health & Social Care or equivalent qualification
  • GCSE or Functional skills Level 1&2 in Math's and English

Desirable

  • High level of IT skills
  • Foundation Degree

Experience and knowledge

  • Working with individuals with mental health needs
  • Know how to communicate complex and potentially distressing information to people in a clear and tactful manner.
