Job summary

The NHS Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Programme has been rolled out across England. The aim of the Programme is to reduce deaths from AAA through early detection, appropriate monitoring and treatment.

The Five Rivers AAA Screening Programme provides community based screening for the population of North East Essex, East Suffolk and the Colne Valley. All men are invited to their local hospital, GP Surgery or health clinic in the year that they turn 65 for an ultrasound scan to see if they have an AAA.

The Five Rivers AAA screening programme are looking to recruit a trainee AAA screening technician to join our small, friendly team.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, friendly individual to provide the appropriate information, advice and reassurance to patients for their screening appointment.

The role is 22.5 hours per week, Working days to be agreed. The team are based at Colchester Hospital.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to further their professional development and be part of a small, supportive, patient centred team.

Please note, in this role you will start as a Band 3 and will be uplifted upon completion of training.

Main duties of the job

The primary purpose of the Screening Technician role is to undertake abdominal ultrasound scanning as part of the community AAA screening programme. You will ensure abdominal ultrasound scanning is undertaken to a high standard and in accordance with national standard operating procedures.

You will reassure men attending the community AAA screening and surveillance clinics and explain the screening test to them. You will ensure that the men attending clinics are informed and aware of the implications of AAA screening. The role may include administrative duties in the Screening office part of the week.
