Job summary

Applications are welcomed from an enthusiastic person, for a Radiotherapy Dosimetrist Practitioner position in the Radiotherapy Physics team based at Ipswich Hospital.

You will join a friendly and experienced team of Clinical Scientists, Dosimetrists and Engineers who will support your development in the role.

You will work with state of the art Radiotherapy equipment including a new Ethos linear accelerator with Hypersight imaging which will be available within the next few months.

Treatment planning workflow is mainly paperless and uses Aria with the Eclipse treatment planning system.The Aria system is being upgraded to the latest version in the coming months. The planning team are responsible for creating treatment plans using a range of planning techniques that include SABR and VMAT.

Experience carrying out quality control checks of radiotherapy equipment, and experience producing both conformal and VMAT or IMRT treatment plans would be ideal. If you are interested in working with us but do not have sufficient experience for the band 6 role, we will consider a developmental post starting at a lower grade.

Main duties of the job

  • To work in the Radiotherapy Physics team of Clinical Scientists, Clinical Engineering Technologists and Physics Practitioners / Dosimetrists providing high quality scientific, clinical, technical and engineering support to the external beam radiotherapy service
  • Participate in the provision of general quality control procedures on radiotherapy and imaging equipment under the scientific supervision of Principal Physicists in conjunction with the lead clinical engineering technologist
  • Participate in the provision of patient specific quality assurance and in-vivo dosimetry for complex radiotherapy treatments under the scientific supervision of Principal Physicists
  • Assist in the manufacture of devices for immobilisation and localisation of radiotherapy treatment such lead cut-outs and patient specific bolus
  • Assist in the design and construction of equipment and devices to aid the development of new systems and techniques within radiotherapy
  • Participate in the provision of an efficient and comprehensive treatment planning service under the scientific supervision of the lead planning physicist undertaking all aspects of external beam planning

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc in Medical Physics, Clinical Technology, Therapeutic Radiography or equivalent
  • Proven experience in a radiotherapy department.
  • To be on, or eligible to join or work towards either HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist or Therapeutic radiographer, or registration as a Clinical Technologist.

Desirable

  • To have been appointed by the Trust (or in previous employment) as an Operator within the meaning of the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations for the areas of treatment plan production and / or treatment machine QC

Knowledge and Experience

Desirable

  • Experience of carrying out quality control checks of radiotherapy equipment. The post holder must know and understand enough about radiation and the radiotherapy equipment that generates the radiation to make safe and reliable measurements in the quality control process.
  • Experience of radiotherapy treatment plan preparation and optimisation
  • Experience of carrying out checking of treatment plans for some treatment sites.
