Job summary
We are looking for an experienced Biomedical Scientist to manage and work in the Blood Transfusion section of Blood Sciences at Ipswich Hospital. The lab is UKAS accredited to ISO:15189 and is MHRA compliant. This post is fixed termuntil February 2025.
You will have either a specialist portfolio in Haematology with Blood Transfusion or a Masters in Haematology with Blood Transfusion to be considered for the post. You must be HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist. Further specialist qualifications within Blood Transfusion would be an advantage.

Main duties of the job
To assist in the supervision and development of all areas of the Blood Transfusion service including:
- Deputise for the Transfusion Laboratory Manager as required
- Maintain relationships with the NHS Blood and Transport and users of the service
- Liaise with the Transfusion Nurse Specialists for continuing improvement in the provision of the service to the Trust and other agencies
- Participate in Hospital Transfusion Committee meetings
- Assist in the review and implementation of national transfusion guidelines
- To help ensure the laboratory computer system is sensitive to Blood Transfusion requirements and appropriate business continuity plans exist in the event of a failure
To assist with quality issues within the Blood Transfusion Laboratory to ensure compliance with the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005 (and amendments) including:
- Maintenance of the cold chain and temperature controlled facilities
- Maintenance of the Quality Management System
- Document review and control
- Validation of equipment and processes
- Management of change control
- Ensuring completion of own transfusion training and competency and relevant training and competency for all staff
- Ensuring completion of own update in good manufacturing practice
- Participation in local Trust and national audits

Essential
- HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
- Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent
- Appropriate Post Graduate qualifications e.g. IBMS Higher Specialist diploma or IBMS Diploma in Biomedical Science, Masters or equivalent or working towards
- Additional appropriate specialist qualification if required.
- Evidence of CPD
- Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science (FIBMS) by examination (Special examination, two-part Fellowship or Higher Specialist Diploma) in blood transfusion or transfusion science.
- MSc or FIBMS in another discipline in conjunction with an IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Transfusion Science MSc in Transfusion and Transplantation accredited by the IBMS.
- Demonstrate equivalence to the learning outcomes of an IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Transfusion Science or an MSc in Transfusion and Transplantation accredited by the IBMS or equivalent experiential learning in the field of Blood Transfusion Science.
