Job summary
We are offering an exciting opportunity for an ambitious, dynamic, inclusive and innovative Chief Pharmacist to lead our Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation service. As professional lead you will oversee operations of a comprehensive pharmacy service and fully licensed manufacturing facilities across two large acute hospitals and community services within North Essex and East Suffolk. We also currently host one of the NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service Medicines Advice sites.
Using your highly developed leadership skills and ability to motivate a team you will harness their abilities to drive and deliver the transformation of our clinical pharmacy service in line with the strategic direction of the trust to deliver a safe patient-focused, cost-effective and high-quality service.
You will use your ability to be creative and innovative to generate opportunities and improvement for the services across the Trust and Integrated Care System and should have experience of service transformation and strategic planning.
You will continue to develop a culture of inclusivity and continuous learning that will make ESNEFT an employer of choice for Pharmacy.
You will act as the Controlled Drug Accountable Officer for the Trust and will report to the Trust Executive and Local Intelligence Network on issues related to controlled drug management. You will be supported by an experienced senior pharmacy leadership team and Divisional/Executive teams.
Main duties of the job
- Accountability for the professional leadership of our clinical pharmacy services.
- Lead a team of highly skilled pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other pharmacy staff working to deliver clinical pharmacy services to patients.
- Act as lead on Medicines Optimisation and provide expert interpretation to the Board and senior managers on all Medicines Optimisation issues to ensure compliance with all legislative, governance and operational aspects of Medicines Optimisation.
- Work with partnership organisations on the development of joint Medicines Optimisation strategies in the local health economy.
- To manage the Pharmacy budget and resources and to create opportunities for income generation.
- Represent the Trust on external medicines related groups or committees.
- Act as Accountable Officer for Controlled Drugs for the Trust.
- Be the responsible officer for the Wholesale Dealers Authorisation.
- Implement the Trust Medicines Optimisation strategy and work plan and other medicines optimisation projects.
- To lead the implementation of the new EPR and standardisation of pathways.
- To lead on potential opportunities for consolidation of services across sites.

- Substantial demonstrable post registration experience as a hospital pharmacist including; Ward Pharmacy, Dispensing, Technical Services, and Purchasing or Logistics.
- Significant demonstrable management and leadership of pharmacy resource in a hospital at Deputy Chief Pharmacist level or equivalent or above including; line management responsibilities, clinical supervision, financial and budgetary management, preparation of and ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures
- Ability to direct relevant practice research, evaluation, audit and clinical trials.
- Significant experience of leading clinical governance and/or clinical risk management.
Desirable
- Considerable demonstrable Team Manager experience within a hospital pharmacy

- Professional vocational qualification acquired through a MPharm (or previously accredited BPharm or BSc pharmacy degree + examined pre-registration
- Post-graduate diploma in clinical pharmacy programme (or able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills through relevant experience).
- Member of General Pharmaceutical Council.
- Supplementary specialist/management training (or equivalent formal training at masters level) in healthcare, pharmacy or management qualification or completion of the NHS Leadership Academy Chief Pharmacist Development Programme (or able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills though relevant experience).
- Recorded evidence of CPD covering a range of post qualification professional training and management development
