Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to join our team principally based at Colchester Hospital but may be required to undertake some clinical or non-clinical activities at Ipswich Hospital. We are inviting applications for a full time Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant with a Specialist interest in hip arthroplasty including revisions and periprosthetic fractures.

Applicants at the time of appointment will have completed CCT or equivalent (CESR or portfolio route) and must be on the Specialist Register. Applicants must be within 6 months of achieving this at the date of interview.

Main duties of the job

This is a new post created due to the great opportunity afforded the department by the development of ESEOC. The Trust has also recognised the need to increase our Trauma provision to optimise the care for some of our most vulnerable patients.

The post-holder will be expected to work within and help develop the hip arthroplasty service. They will be required to work in collaboration with the wider MDT. Arthroplasty and revision hip MDT structure is currently being reorganised to be across the ICS but will be a definite part of the job plan. There may be some limited primary knee arthroplasty opportunity but this post does not involve any non-arthroplasty hip or knee surgery.

The post holder will be expected to attend and contribute to the department's clinical meetings, audits and clinical governance.

The appointment start date is expected to be August-October 2024.

The post-holder will be expected to work with colleagues and the Clinical Lead & Director to ensure the service is delivered in line with best practice. The appointee will be largely based at Colchester Hospital but may be required to undertake clinical and non-clinical work at other sites such as Ipswich and will be expected to work flexibly.

This role involves a one in 12 on calls (adult and paediatric trauma). They will be expected to deal with the general trauma as well as subspecialty trauma including periprosthetic fractures.

About us

The Trauma & Orthopaedic department is a large part of the MSK Clinical Delivery Group within the Division of MSK and Specialist Surgery Division. The MSK CDG consists of T&O, Pain Management, Rheumatology and Spinal services. The department covers most secondary orthopaedic conditions and some tertiary referral practices.

The Dame Clare Marx building will be a new £64million state-of-the-art building which will house the Essex and Suffolk Elective Orthopaedic Centre (ESEOC) due to open in August 2024. The building is on the Colchester site but will serve all our patients from Suffolk and Essex. The centre is for surgery only - patients will still go to their closest hospital for hospital care before and after the operation. There will be three wards and eight theatres.

ESNEFT has been successful in being accredited as a regional hub for revision knee surgery. As the network for shoulder and hip revision surgery develops, we hope to become a major regional centre.

We have a simple philosophy: Time Matters. Time matters for our patients, their families and our staff. By focusing on time, we can remove unnecessary stress and frustration - giving our patients a better experience and to make sure you have more time to care and make the most of your skills.
