Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to join our team at Ipswich Hospital in the Child Health CDG. We are inviting applications for a full time Paediatric Consultant. Candidates with special interests will be welcome, and if they are aligned to the needs of the department, these interests can be fully supported.

The job plan is expected to consist of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) and the exact details of job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate after their appointment.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the Consultant of the week rota according to departmental requirements - currently on a 1:10 basis with funding agreed to move to 1:12 (recruitment pending). There is usually one Consultant on call, covering general paediatrics in the morning and general paediatrics and neonates in the afternoon and an additional consultant on call for neonates in the morning. The proposed 1:12 rota is supplied.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in weekend and night on call cover.

Currently, weekends are annualised, with winter weekends currently operating with two consultants, and summer weekends with one consultant. This currently equates to 1 in 7 weekends. Weekday nights are a 1 in 10 rota (equates to around 1-3 per month).

Main duties of the job

With the planned increase in consultant numbers, it is planned that the weekday nights will move to 1 in 12, and the weekends will no longer be annualised, and work on a 1:6 basis, one consultant working days, and one nights on call, to minimise the length of time of continuous on call.

The successful candidate will be expected to share outpatient responsibilities with a minimum of 3 General paediatric clinics a week, depending on other commitments. Further discussion re exact composition of the role can be clarified and discussed with the Clinical Lead prior to application and will be reviewed in line with the prior experience of the appointee. This will be formally accepted and reviewed as part of the Job Planning process of the trust.

The successful candidate will be expected to share child protection/safeguarding work when "Consultant of the week".

There will be an expectation to share work related to relevant committees, working groups, educational supervision, and training of staff within the department.

Consultant Job Plan (Non-consultant of the week)

On call 1 in 12 Weekdays

1 in 6 Weekends (but with responsibility only for the day or night)

1 in 12 Consultant for the week for general paeds

This is a proposed plan but will only be agreed at the time of the appointment or start of the post - depending on the area of special interest of the appointee
