Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Trust Registrar in Neurology for ESNEFT, working on the Colchester Hospital site. This is a new post to support the service and Consultant team.The division of Medicine & Emergency Care is sub-divided into 'General Medicine' and 'Specialist Medicine.' The specialities incorporated within the division are General Medicine, Emergency Medicine (incorporating A&E and Acute Medicine), Thoracic Medicine, Cardiology, Stroke Services, Nephrology, Endocrinology/Diabetes Services and Neurology.The Neurology staff at Colchester currently comprises three consultants (Dr Sharief, Dr Imtiaz, Dr Salari); and six specialist nurses (two in Epilepsy, two in Multiple Sclerosis & two in Parkinson's Disease).Together, the Neurology staff provide a wide variety of outpatient clinics at Colchester Hospital. Demand for neurology outpatient services has been rising steadily over the past decade and the service currently sees over 3000 new patients and over 4000 follow-up patients each year. All consultants contribute to the general Neurology outpatient service, which includes a fast-track pathway for patients with suspected seizures. In addition, there are subspecialty clinics for patients.

Main duties of the job

The post will be for one year in the first instance.

The appointee will primarily work as part of a dynamic and flexible team comprising of consultant neurologists and nurse specialists, looking after patients in Neurology.As a neurologist, Responsibilities will include:o diagnose complex neurological problems by listening to the patient's history, as well as by examining them and using appropriate neurological testso run outpatient clinics, where you'll mainly see patients with a chronic condition, i.e. a disease that takes a long time to develop such as Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis, or diagnose rare diseaseso complete ward rounds where you'll look provide advice on the neurological management of inpatientso treat acute conditions, i.e. those that come on suddenly, such as Guillain Barre syndrome or status epilepticuso offer specialist expertise and guidance to other doctors and staff from a range of medical specialtieso spend time with other neurological colleagues for learning and development and to discuss cases as a team, drawing on the expertise of all these specialistso liaise with other medical and non-medical staff in hospital settings to ensure all of the patients' needs are meto keep up your knowledge of the latest treatments for neurological disorders, which have increased significantly over recent yearso carry out teaching of junior staff, audits of practice and research.

The successful applicant will receive training in General Neurology and depending on the individuals interest an arrangement can be made for participation in sub-specialty clinics. The post-holder will have a valuable opportunity to participate in further development of services, which forms an important part of higher medical training. Applicants must have MRCP (UK) or the equivalent.

POST SPECIFIC what to expect

The role is varied and you'll offer advice on the neurological management of inpatients on the ward, as well as running outpatient clinics. You'll encounter more chronic neurological disease. This allows you to build a long, therapeutic relationship with some patients who you'll see over years. You'll be treating illnesses that can affect the young, such as neuromuscular disorders, and those that affect the old, such as dementia. You may encounter some cases where patients have problems that are mainly psychological but still very disabling. These include types of fits, seizures or black outs that aren't epileptic in origin but related to complicated reactions to stress or traumas.
