Job summary
The NHS Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Programme has been rolled out across England. The aim of the Programme is to reduce deaths from AAA through early detection, appropriate monitoring and treatment. The Five Rivers AAA Screening Programme provides community based screening for the population of North East Essex, East Suffolk and the Colne Valley. All men are invited to their local hospital, GP Surgery or health clinic in the year that they turn 65 for an ultrasound scan to see if they have an AAA.
The Five Rivers AAA screening programme are looking to recruit a Clinical Skills Trainer to join our small, friendly team.
This post is 7.5 hours per week preferably to be worked one day a week.
We are looking for an advanced practitioner who holds a CASE-accredited qualification or full SVT accreditation to join our team. You will be responsible for the clinical training and supervision of new and existing Screening Technicians, ensuring that ultrasound scanning is performed to a high standard and in accordance with national standard operating procedures.
Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for the clinical training and supervision of new and existing Screening Technicians, ensuring that ultrasound scanning is performed to a high standard and in accordance with national standard operating procedures.
In addition to regularly reviewing the images gained by Screening Technicians, you will attend screening clinics in the community to complete clinical assessments and to offer training and support to the screeners.
You will be required to complete the national training for Clinical Skills Trainers, which includes clinical assessor training.

- To be responsible for the clinical training and supervision of new and existing Screening Technicians, ensuring they are familiar with scanning techniques and the screening programme procedures and that high standards of work are maintained.
- To review images gained by the Screening Technicians to ensure ultrasound scanning is performed to a high standard and in accordance with national standard operating procedures.
- To manage and review the work of the Screening Technicians at regular intervals as per programme quality assurance framework and instigate further training where necessary.
- To plan and provide local training and CPD sessions including supervisory sessions as per clinical training requirements.
- To offer support and advice to Screening Technicians if they encounter problems or unusual findings, particularly associated with conditions of patients or technical malfunctions.
- To ensure all Screening Technicians are aware of and understand the scope of practice for Screening Technicians in NAAASP.
- To perform clinical assessments of trainee Screening Technicians at the specified assessment gateways as per NAAASP Timeline for Training and Accreditation and ensure trainee technicians complete their portfolio of experience. This should include the assessment of work submitted by trainee Screening Technicians undertaking the Heath Screening Diploma. This is not only clinical assessment but assessing written work (eg case studies, written Q and A, reflections etc), verbal question and answer sessions and professional discussions.
- To undertake accurate abdominal ultrasound scanning as part of the local AAA Screening programme.
- To ensure that members of the public attending clinics are informed and are fully aware of the implications of AAA screening.
