Job summary

An exciting and rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced and dynamic nurse to join Colchester Hospital as an Acute Pain Clinical Nurse Specialist. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your career by taking this role as the Lead Nurse for Acute/Inpatient Pain Management.

You will be responsible, along with our Consultant Anaesthetists specialising in Pain Management, in maintaining the very highest standards of pain management within the Trust This involves daily ward rounds, responding to complex referrals from all areas of the hospital and overseeing and managing a diverse teaching programme plus writing and updating Trust Guidelines relating to all forms of Pain Management. You will be a role model as well as a sound reliable resource for nursing and medical staff within the Trust.

We have strong links with Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Essex who support us with a wide range of CPD modules at BSc and MSc Levels. We also offer added opportunities for in house continued clinical skills training and interpersonal skills workshops.

Band 6 developmental roles would be considered for applicants who do not currently fulfil the specification for a band 7 post. This will be assessed as part of the interview process.

Main duties of the job

As an experienced nurse you will deliver a high quality pain management specialist nursing service to our patients and staff by promoting excellence in practice.

In this role you will:

  • organise and facilitate the provision of effective pain management strategies for in patients, particularly in the post-operative period and for patients admitted to hospital with acute pain.
  • work autonomously within the pain management team.
  • supervise nursing provision to inpatient pain service, providing support to nursing colleagues.
  • provide telephone/bleep response to wards and enquiries from other healthcare professionals.
  • assess patients referred to pain service pre-operatively.
  • assist with pain management for chronic pain in patients as requested by colleagues on wards and A&E.
  • advise and support ward managers in implantation of safe and effective pain management.
  • review in-patient referrals
  • give advice on pain management where appropriate.
