Pre-Operative Assessment Nurse-Spinal

Job summary

This is an exciting new post for a Registered Nurse to support the elective spinal service by undertaking pre- operative assessment for patients awaiting spinal surgery.

You will have your own clinic lists and work alongside the Surgical Care Practitioners in ensuring patients are assessed as ready and prepared for surgery.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they have the willingness, dedication and ability to learn and develop, use their own initiative and already ideally have experience in pre-operative assessments or transferrable knowledge and skills. Full training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

  • To use advanced assessment and critical analysis skills to assess patients preoperatively within the elective spinal speciality.
  • Order and review preoperative tests/investigations according to agreed criteria that meets NICE guidelines.
  • Advise patients on preoperative medication management.
  • Participate in infection control screening.
  • Provide written and verbal information to ensure patients have a clear understanding of their procedure, the admission and discharge process.
  • To work alongside the anaesthetists/spinal consultants in preparing the patients safely for theatre within the RTT timescales.
  • Raise patient awareness on a range of health promotion strategies to improve their operative outcomes, offering referrals as appropriate.
  • To work with other health care professionals both in primary and secondary care to optimise patient health care needs preoperatively.
