Job summary

To work as part of the integrated therapy team to deliver therapeutic input to children with the aim of achieving maximum independent living, within a stimulating environment actively promoting self-management on all activities of daily living.

Working as an autonomous practitioner, the post holder will provide specialist input to all children that fall within their specialist field of expertise.

Work with colleagues across health, social care, mental health and voluntary sector to ensure holistic and joined up delivery of care.

Empower children and their families to make decisions about their own care and encourage them to exercise their rights and choices, signposting them to relevant community and voluntary services and supporting Children carers and assistants with management of risk.

Main duties of the job

To take a lead within the multi-disciplinary team, where appropriate, providing advice to other health professionals, education services, social services and voluntary agencies.

Develop programmes of specialist therapeutic activities, weighing options and delegating aspects of care as appropriate.

Support children and their families with advice, information, persuasion and direction to community resources to encourage self-management and ongoing independence.

Provide support, training and advice to children, parents and carers.

Oversee the work of more junior staff, assistants and associate practitioners.

Deputising for more senior team members as required.

To ensure appropriate integrated pathways of care and communication via liaison and referral to other agencies as required.

To participate in a full Community Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy service within the organisation.

  • Registered Speech and Language therapist with HCPC
  • Relevant post qualification training through short courses and/or further study and experience, working towards post graduate level of study
  • Evidence of working at Level C of the RCSLT Dysphagia Competency Framework (Specialist Dysphagia Practitioner)
  • Evidence of on-going CPD

Desirable

  • Registered member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists

Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience working within the relevant specialist area
  • Evidence of competencies relevant to specialism

Desirable

  • Experience of managing the work of others

Skills

  • Car owner/driver/access to a motor vehicle (role will involve travel to other sites that cannot be easily accessed by public transport means)
  • Evidence of prioritising own and others' workload, delegating appropriately

  • Ability to act as care coordinator
