Job summary

We are inviting applications for a full time post in Vascular Surgery to join our team at Colchester and Ipswich Hospital.

Candidates must have received training in all aspects of modern vascular surgery including endovascular training and peripheral interventions. Applicants for Consultant posts must either be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within 6 months of their CCT date at the interview date, or be in possession of the CCT. Appointment to Consultant posts is subject to being entered on the Specialist Register.

The Five Rivers Vascular Unit is an established centre for arterial surgery for North Essex, parts of Mid Essex and East Suffolk. All elective and emergency arterial surgery is performed at CGH. The candidate will be expected to participate in a one in 7 or 1 in 8 vascular on call rota. The post holder's duties will be split between the main arterial hub at Colchester and our partnership hospital in Ipswich.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will:

  • Work with colleagues to provide a Consultant-led service with the highest standard of care
  • Work with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines
  • Develop and maintain good working practices with wards, out-patients and the ED
  • Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues, other departments and primary care
  • Work with a senior colleague or colleagues for a period of mentoring for complex clinical and surgical elective and emergency/on-call cases until the post-holder is happy to continue unaided. We have a departmental policy for all complex aortic cases to be performed with two consultants present; either two surgeons or a surgeon and vascular radiologist.
  • Offer educational, clinical support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary
  • Ensure appropriate information is made available to staff to measure clinical performance and enable meaningful benchmarks to be established and evaluated within your area of responsibility
  • Ensure there is a robust process for reviewing the quality of services provided, explaining the causes of success and failure and ensure the highest standards are maintained
  • Ensure that junior doctors training conforms to College requirements
  • Participate in the appraisal of medical staff within the department in line with the Trust's agree policy

There's a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children's Unit.
