Job Outline

Duties and responsibilities

To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide evidence-based care for all in patients. To liaise effectively and in a timely manner with surgical, medical, and nursing colleagues and all other health care agencies when appropriate

To assist in the provision and development of a safe and effective Service and support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients.

Out- of-hours on-call responsibilities, including participation in the on-call rota. On-call frequency will be 1:8. Commitments include cover for ICU, Theatres and Obstetrics depending on experience

To carry out all duties to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within that area of work.

Cover for colleagues annual leave and other authorised absences.

A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.

To carry out their duties with due regard to the Trusts Equal Opportunities policy at all times.

Teaching

To assist in the professional supervision and management of trainee medical staff

To organise and participate in teaching, examination and accreditation duties for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity.

To participate in the education and teaching of nursing and ODP staff

Research and Audit

To be actively involved in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in continuing professional development

To implement audit and research findings as appropriate

Policy and Planning

To contribute to the development of clinical and organisational guidelines

To review and develop policies for clinical practice and effectiveness

To participate in the strategic planning for the service

To comply with current Trust policies and procedures

Management & Communication

To participate in all aspects of Service Line and Hospital affairs, including attendance at Consultant Meetings and to represent the department on appropriate committees/working parties when required.

To develop and monitor performance indicators for the anaesthetic and critical care service and implement action as necessary

To assist in the effective handling of patients complaints

Record Keeping

All staff who have access to or transfer data are responsible for that data and must respect confidentiality and comply with the requirement of the Data Protection Act 1998, in line with the Trusts policies

The post-holder is responsible for data quality and complying with policies, procedures and accountability arrangements throughout the Trust for maintaining accuracy and probity in the recording of the Trusts activities

Qualifications and Training

Essential

• Medical degree and full registration and licence to practice with the General Medical Council
• At least 4 years full time (or part time equivalent) post graduate training with at least 2 years in anaesthetics

Desirable

• FRCA or equivalent overseas degree/diploma
• NHS Experience
• Completion of stage 1 Training in anaesthesia

Clinical Skills

Essential

• Acute care safe: it is expected that the postholder should be acute care safe. This can be demonstrated by an up to-date ALS certificate of equivalent.
• Relevant specialty clinical knowledge: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job. Minimum of 2 years' experience of anaesthetics in an acute care setting including elective and emergency work. Experience of obstetrics anaesthesia including epidural analgesics is important. Candidate should be able to provide evidence of this e.g. through a logbook or testimonials
• Clinical judgment: experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need
• Practical skills: shows aptitude for practical skills, required in the job.
• Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required in the job

Specialty specific skills related to the post

Essential

• Evidence of basic training in anaesthetics: the minimum time spent in basic level training will normally comprise 24 months in anaesthetics
• Evidence of basic competency in obstetrics anaesthesia: before being allowed to work in an obstetrics unit without direct supervision the candidate will be formally assessed as competent in the basic obstetric anaesthetics skills.
• Evidence of basic competency in critical care: before being allowed to work in a critical care unit without direct 20 supervision the candidate will be formally assessed as competent in the basic critical care anaesthetics skills in accordance with FICM requirements.
• The ability to undertake pre-operative assessment, obtain consent for anaesthetic procedures and prescribe premedication
• Be responsible for the routine induction, maintenance and recovery from general anaesthesia of ASA grade I or II patients and their safe discharge.
• Understand the safe use or anaesthesia equipment and the use, interpretation and limitations of monitoring equipment.
• The ability to recognise ASA III, IV and V patients, understand the difficult intubation and the timing and the need to call for senior help.
• The ability to assess, resuscitate and manage a trauma patient, and when necessary to stabilise the patient and prepare for transfer
• The ability to resuscitate a patient following a respiratory or cardiac arrest to the standards set by the Resuscitation Council (UK) and to describe the management of critical incidents
• Ability to establish and manage sub-arachnoid and epidural blockage, IVRA and some simple peripheral nerve blocks.
• Understand the implications of pregnancy, childhood (above age of 5), old age and infectious diseases in the pre, intra and post-operative periods
• Understand the principles of intensive and high dependency care, and which groups of patients can benefit from them.
• Understand the safe use of anaesthetic and other drugs with regard to possible drug errors.
